Can anyone recommend where I can get hold of replacement Smiths grey faced speedo & tacho for my '69 TR6, i've got black faced ones & have been told they should be grey...
Hi Paul,
Most good bike shops should stock them, there are several in the UK but I'm not sure about the US.
Have a look here, they are in the UK http://www.burtonbikebits.net/Speedos.htm
Note that the clocks changed around mid season in the 1970 model year, so there is a very good chance you have the correct clocks.
Triumph model years ran from August thru to July the following year, so if the build date of your bike is late 69 you most likely have the correct clocks.
There are a few tell tale signs on the later models, the rear grab rail on the early models was chrome and black, the later models all chrome. The side stand was modified with a adjustable stop screw. The gearbox plunger was changed to a leaf spring (look under the gearbox, if there is a blank boss you have a leaf spring)
Finally, the front engine mounts where bolted on in the later models.
If you give us your frame/engine number we will be able to figure out exactly what you should have.
Sorry Paul,
I didn't realise you where in the UK!
As you are in Surrey, try Carl Rosners, they still stock a lot of NOS Triumph stuff. (I've used them many times over the years when I used to live in Sussex and they have always been very good)
Have you thought of trying a local man to you- Mr Pople who has a workshop in Aldershot. His details are as follows:- Speedo Repairs, Unit 12/13, Vehicle Centre, Ashchurch Road, Aldershot, GU12 6LX.
He has done two lots of work for me & I would recommend him. See http://www.speedorepairs.co.uk

Just spoken to the guy at Gagg & Sons, and he says definately a '69 Trophy are grey faced, and he can renovate my existing ones, to look like new for £220 + VAT. Downside is it will take approx. 3 weeks !!
