this is a hard one to answer.

1. do you know if it has ever been cleaned?

2. if oil comes oil clean or very dirty a oil changes?

3.type of oil you use cheap or good stuff?

4. my answer is if bike runs great and shows no signs of it need in rebuilt leave alone until a problem comes up where its not much more work to take apart and clean.(new bearing or rering etc.)

5. to clean trap you also have to look into gaskets, bearing, rod bolts, maybe machine work, rings, vavles etc.$$$$

if its not broke dont worry or you will go broke trying to fix nothing.

If it has been running on modern detergent oils rather than straight mineral oils for the last twenty years , l would leave alone. l am led to believe that detergent oil doesn't allow the sludge trap to work properly as l suspends it better to reach the filter ( which most olduns don't have). As previously stated wait for rebuild time.

Wow! A Yupper accent SOO thick, it actually translates to print.

Am I to understand you've rebuilt this motor last year?
Pulled and cleaned the trap while you were at it?
Add a Norton or Trident oil filter. Detergent oil will probly
double the miles to fill the trap. A filter will quadruple (or more)
the amount of miles.
And 20/50 oil is what you should run.

At 11k on the clock. My trap was about 60% filled. It had never been
pulled, so it spent many of those miles with non detergent oil.

Nice how-to and filters that will fit the Norton adaptor. Found here.

And the Trident style. It can be mounted in a couple places.

Believe it or not, it has been stated "way back when" that the detergent oils will fill the trap quicker than the non-detergent ones, as they keep the contaminants in suspension instead of them getting "stuck" to the inner walls of the crankcase. The theory was that the engine was its own filter all those years ago and when the obligatory 20,000 or so mile tear down was done, one would clean the sludge from the inside of the engine which was left by the non-detergent lubes. It would be nice to find out that it's not true, believe me. I added a filter to my '70 some 20 or more years ago in hopes of avoiding problems...so far, so good (now, having said that..........!!) Don Hutchinson, who's one of the Triumph "gurus" in the Northeast simply says to change your oil often, every 1,000 miles or so, and it should be fine. I've tried to do mine every 500, but never any more than 1,000.

Oil is still the cheapest thing you can put into a motor: Jim
