temporary substitute engine - posts and ducks

So things are tight (thanks to the 71 rebuild) and I am thinking about the mongrel 48 bobber that is up next.
I now have a tank and a frame, a trailbike 23" front end and that's about it.

the controversial question is... can I put any other motor in the 48 rigid frame while I source and rebuild a proper one? I am talking about a simple 250 trailbike motor from the wreckers.

Keep in mind I am a steel fabricator, so making brackets won't be hard.

cheers
derek

Hi derek,
In theory anything is possible But I would say that the bracket fabrication would be the easy bit!
If you are going to install a jap engine with a brit rear wheel, you would need to think quite long and hard about the final gearing and most probably need to get a custom rear sprocket made somewhere. Other things that could be a headache are the electrics and the exhaust system.
I'm not trying to discourage you, just saying think a little before you run off to the wreckers and buy a motor

call me lazy

I'm building a Bitsa right now and it is hard enough for me to get parts to work. The reverse engineering just switching from year to year using supposedly interchangeable pieces has really increased the time and effort involved. There is more than bracket fabrication involved. I can't imagine trying to build/engineer it with one set up just to have to redo it differently unless I was just doing it for the satisfaction of designing/creating something or really needed something to ride. Of course, there are lots of people in both sitituations, just not me. I have two other bikes I can ride and other projects if I need to feel creative. Bottom line is it's your toy, play with it as you see fit.
