GPS, Tacho/Speedo... hrmmm.
Out of the 500 ideas this week I have had about my bike, this one keeps returning to me.
My bike is a long way from original, and in my hands will never return there, so this had me thinking about speedo and tacho units.
The GPS I carry round in my car gives an accurate speed indicator, apparently most of them do. And I have heard of electronic (as opposed to cable driven) tachos.
Now, I would be very surprised if someone hasn't married all this together as an after market dashboard setup for a motorbike. Ideally it would also have turn indicator lights and maybe the high/low beam indicator.
Anyone ever heard of, or even seen something like this?

Nice thing about a Vapor is it is a true on-board computer. It will capture sufficient data to do actual dyno runs on the street to see if minor tweaks to things like timing or mixture make a difference and where.
I mentioned this in a previous thread on dyno runs. I have two friends who are much younger and race at Loudon in the LRRS. Both have Vapors on their bikes.
regards,
Rob

I stumbled upon the Vapors earlier, they are a very impressive setup.
I s'pose it was just laziness on my part that made me think of letting a GPS register my speed, as opposed to the traditional cable or an electronic setup. On top of having the other benefits of a GPS installed, it would mean I could eliminate one cable. Plus there would be a bonus of sorts if ever final drive ratios were experimented with, you would still retain a highly accurate speedo.

the vapor speedo is programmable . besides , it's sensor is reading off the front wheel/hub so change final gearing , tire size all you want . it won't effect the accuracy one bit .
the other thing is that there's a reason motorcycle specific gps units cost so much ($600 and up). they're built to withstand the beating of being cycle mounted . i've read many a post of car gps units failing after little use on a bike .
the cylinder head temp sensor looks interesting too .
cheers , Woody

Wow, I want one of those vapor units, dang it! I wonder if there is a sensor out there that could run off the mechanical tach drive so you could also use the tach feature of the vapor. Even if not, I still think I might have to have one.
crap there goes another hundred dollars!

no need for a mechanical tach drive . it's inductive off the sparkplug wire ! easy as pie .
main reason i'm going this route is my bike isn't stock anyway . originally didn't have a tach and my speedo while rebuildable needs a new drive and cable . add up all the parts for even repros and it's over $500 .
cheers , Woody

I forgot all about that it could be inductive! I guess I really am an engineer!
I wan't one mainly because I like gadgets, and my speedo doesn't work. My tach works, but once again, I like fancy stuff. I ride my bike, and while it still retains the stock look it will never be original. It's original to me, though.
Yep, It's official, I am gonna get one!
