Question New member from Philly

Checkin in from Philly. I'm the proud owner of 2 72 Bonnevilles: a T120r and a T120v. I'm gonna need help keeping these two vintage bikes in running order. First order of business, starting problems. Anybody rebuild their Amals recently? What tricks can you advise?

Welcome mgrosso!
Maybe if you could elaborate your starting problems, someone can help.

Mgrosso,

Welcome to the forum. Second like already stated, you need to
be more colorful in your discription. What is the bike doing when
you try to start? What have you done already in trying to fix
the problem?

I once tried to sell a car. the ad read, "Red car comes with four
wheels, $5,000.00" Leaves a lot out, eh? The devil is in the details.

We need some more information, please.

More info on starting problem 72 t120r

Looked in the troubleshooting section of Modern Motorcyles. When trying to kick over, strong smell of gas, engine stutters for a few seconds then quits. the book suggests holding the throttle open while kicking to clear out the carbs. This helps but after running for about ten-twenty seconds the engine quits, won't restart. Personally I think the carbs need work. Any suggestions?

Welcome.

FIRST THING TO DO: get a shop manual and a parts book. Better yet, get "Kim the CD Man" 2-disc Triumph reference CD; best money you'll ever spend on those two.

Start with www.amalcarb.co.uk. Your carbs will be Amal Concentric Mk1 900 Series

Well,

that is some more info, like the other have already suggested follow
their links, some good information there. And manuals are a must.

But on to your problem. You need to sort out if it is fuel or spark
causing you woes. Spark is fast and easy to check. So start with
that. Just make sure the plugs are new, and all connection are
clean and tight. Are the points and condensors new or old?

On to the carburators-- a Strong smell of fuel is one thing if it is
carburators, and of course that is a rich mixture. You should remove
the carburators and clean them, make sure the float is set right
and the needle is not sticking or that the ticklers are sticking either.

Good as place as any to start,
