Amal Carb Questions

Looking at the carbs on my 69 T120 I notice when I pull the throttle cable the slides move up but the air valve doesn't move, it sits there. What's the purpose of the air valve, should it not move with the slide?

take the air/choke slides out and blank the cable holes with a couple of small nuts and bolts. They are not required and just cause problems.

There are no cables to the air sides! It just sits there. Posssibly I'm missing something from the carbs. I don't see a cable hole for the air slide. I'll remove them.

The air valve is the 'choke'. If they are still there, the choke lever should still be on the handlebars ... you may be looking at it wrong ... cable 'relaxed' is choked (air valve 'down' and blocking a portion of the air entering the carb) ... cable 'taut' is normal run position (air valve up and out of the way allowing all the air to enter the carb). Except in really cold weather, you should be fine without a choke. As stated before, just remove the air valves (and their associated spring, etc) and seal the hole in the top of the carbs where their cables would have gone through.

It probably looks like You do not have a cable hole because the choke cable holder may have already been replaced with a screw/ nut. Do you have Monobloc or Concentric carb?

Amal 930 Concentric carbs. The air slide sitting there is probably why I'm having starting problems.

If you get it started it will cause it to run really rich when it wets warmed up. Some bikes run fine without the air valves, some, like my 68 T120, won't run for doodly until they get warm unless the air valves are closed a bit.

As I don't have a choke cable, I removed the air valves and plugged the hole with a bolt/nut, hopefully she'll start today !!

I'm with Nick L take the air slides out. You don't need them if you have ticklers on the carbs. Plug the hole for the cable with something. Bike will run horribly rich with chokes on all the time.

The chokes were not fitted to mine.
Filled the top holes with silicon filler.
