Wiring help in headlamp and ignition switch

Hi all,
Just starting setting up my new harness.
Couple of questions already!

My bike is a 68 Bonnie, wire harness is supposedly 68 Bonnie (from Klempfs). So, how comes there is a pilot light housing attached to the harness in headlamp? I thought the pilot was a seperate wire connected to light switch. Or is this bulb holder the ignition warning light????

Next, the backing of my headlamp does not appear to have a place for the pilot light. Isnt the pilot light supposed to clip inside the headlamp back cover? If i have wrong cover - do you think i could drill the hole for it?

Finally, Ignition switch - has Brown/white and 2 brown green wires goint to it. Is there a particular order they are attached?

Really finally: does it matter which way round the brown/white or brown/blue go on the ammeter?

If anyone has pics of their 68 (or similar) Bonnie headlamp and other electrics (I am just starting a whole rewire), that would be helpful

Thanks, as always, Kev

Hi Kev,
I don't know much about the pre OIF models but I can tell you that the ignition (oil) warning light should come off the oil pressure switch.
Your loom will be wired for a pilot light but the light is not a legal requirement in the US so it is possible to buy headlamps with or without the hole for the bulb, both are correct.
For the wiring to your switch, get a multimeter and trace the negative from the battery, this is the "power in" next trace the other two wires they should go towards the lighting/switches and the ignition system. These are the "power out" Finally check the switch and all should become clear

I hope this helps

Webby yes thats certainly a help.

Got me thinking though: did any of the USA Bonnies get shipped without the pilot lights (during 60s?) or did my PO put an incorrect headlamp in (with no pilot light fixture)?

Looking at the home and export wiring diagrams, both show a pilot light. Plus a search on the forums didnt show anyone having a problem with nowhere to stick their pilot light. So....maybe its a problem for just me??

Id go ahead and try and drill a hole in the shell but it feels rather brittle.

Hi Kev
I don't know if any bonnies were shipped without the pilot light But I've seen them both with and without
my bike came with a sealed beam lamp with no pilot
I forgot to mention that the oil light switch connection on your loom should be a single spade connector

From the picture of the back of your headlight, it does not appear to be any hole for the pilot light, no don't try and drill a new hole, just buy a new headlight with a pilot bulb hole. Walridge has them (Genuine Lucas Light Unit "7") on sale in Canada for $37.50 CND.

I asked the same thing a while back. I'm 80% sure the ign switch
wires are as stated in the last post here.

My 70 Bonnie has a WIPAC reflector bucket. I believe this is a US
replacement part? I have both the pilot and a spot in the reflector
to put it.

Thanks Shrugger - but i didnt see an answer to your question on that thread. The poster afterwards refers to the light switch and not the ignition switch.

In what order or wires did you finally get the ignition swtich working?

THANKS!!!!!!

I guess your right.
It's still a pile of parts. But looking at the POS switch the wires are
soldered to. The white/brown is attached to it. Then the other end
is plugged into the bucket switch.

Hi Kev,
As I said previously you should have one wire in and two wires out. I think that the white/brown is the power in and the brown/blue go to the ignition/ammeter etc.
Get a multimeter and check the switch, you should find continuity between two of the connections even in the off position, these are the power out for the ignition, lighting, ammeter etc. The one connector left over should be the power in, this will show no continuity when the switch is in the off position but continuity between all three connections when the switch is on.

I believe the wires would be correctly lined here if I rotated the
ignition switch 180º ??
