Hey, I'm new to this forum and thought I'd introduce myself. Got some questions too, so I'll ask those first.
1969 TR6R - 650 cc - single carb - all stock except the exhaust
1. What type of oil can I use in the primary case? SAE 30? 20W/50?
2. What's the oil capacity of the primary?
3. How can I check the oil level in the primary?
4. What type of oil should I use in the transmission? The Haynes manual says SAE50, but I seem to recall that some people use 80W/90 gear oil.
5. What's the capacity of the transmission and how can I check the level?
6. What's the best way to lubricate the cables?
7. Is there only 1 zerk fitting on the swingarm for grease?
I inherited this bike from my dad who passed away in 2000. He purchased the bike new in 1970. He rode it on a regular basis until 1977 when he dad a near death experience and decided he should stop riding since he had 3 little kids at home.
I pulled it out of the garage in 1986 when I was in high school and cleaned it up, painted the tank and fenders, and some other minor work. I rode it for a few years and then it sat in my dads garage for a while again. I think the last time it was started was 1997.
So I just recently hauled it into my garage and am going to do some more work on it. It's been a long time since I wrenched on it and I can't quite seem to remember all the little details.
My plan is to change all the oil (engine, primary, tranny), clean the screen oil filter, clean out the gas tank, rebuild the carb, replace the spark plugs and wires, and clean the air filter. Then put in a new battery and see if she starts. Any advice is much appreciated. From what I've seen so far, there's some knowledgable people here.
And yes, I did search the forum and couldn't find any answers to my questions.

You need a repair manual. That will answer a bunch of your questions.

1. 20W50, same as the engine
2. 350 cc
3. There is a plug at the rear. Whit the bile level. fill until it flows out the hole.
4. 80W90 gear lube will work fine.
5. 500 cc There is a drain plug in the bottom, remove the small plug and fill until overflow.
6. Use a cable lube device.
7. Yes, only one zerk
8. Find a service manual and parts manual copy on ebay. You will find it useful.
9. You have the BEST triumph ever made. The pinnacle!
Regards,
Tom

was it this forum where somebody had a url for .pdf copies of repair manuals?
i just got my own inherited 72 tr6r off the truck and under a cover in my back yard. doesn't run, no charge, lots of leaks and it looks like the wires came out of a bird nest.
i don't have any experience with brit bikes and expect this to be a real trial by fire.
let me ask y'all this: do triumphs need a hot battery before they'll kickstart? i always used to get my honda started by rolling start when the battery would die, but i seem to remember reading something about how triumphs need a hot battery to do just about anything -- is there any truth to that, or could i kick it with a dead battery (if everything worked)?

If you have a capacitor that works, kickstarting w/o a battery is possible. Unless the alternator is weak. Unless it has a Boyer. Unless it's too cold outside. Unless the gods are not smiling on you that particular day.

One more thing, there are grease fittings on the brake arms (little funny looking bits in the center of the arm bolt) and on the speedometer drive box at the rear wheel. You will probably need one of the adapters that are sold for these type, or one of the needle types may do the job. DON'T OVERDO IT WITH THE GREASE, JUST PUMP IT IN UNTIL IT STARTS TO OOZE OUT AROUND THE SPRINGS ON THE ARMS. YOU ONLY NEED A COUPLE OF PUMPS ON THE SPEEDO DRIVE, ONCE A YEAR; TOO MUCH, AND IT'LL FIND IT'S WAY INTO THE REAR BRAKE, EVENTUALLY. ASK ME HOW I KNOW!
My rear brakes used to be original: Jim
