I have a slight leak in the fork seal and want to refill and keep it filled with out draining. I know it takes 190 cc but is there a sight level to fill to so I can keep it topped up until I get to the new seals?

to my knowledge there`s no sight level but correct me if im wrong, what i would be looking at is why the seal is failing ?? is there pitting on the fork leg or has it been straightened ??

just my thoughts !!

You could always use a dipstick to measure the level of the good one, then top up the leaking one to the same level.

But you need to remove the springs and compress the fork leg to do that properly. By that time you are half way to being able to change the seal.

Nowadays most manufacturers suggest filling the fork legs by level rather than by volume as it is more accurate.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the forks . Possibly just old. but I noticed it after it was tied down in the truck for transport. I'm thinking the extreme compression may have been the last straw for an old seal. No pits or scratches that I can see. I'm going to put gaiters on it when I do the seals
Slinky are you saying I can't just open the drain plug and let it drain out or , just use your dip stick idea and leave what oil is still in there alone? It's not dripping out, it just leaves more of an"oil slick" on the tube than the other "good" side. I have to take the bars off to get the big cap nut off but I'm trying to avoid removing the wheel and brake in an effort to avoid a big project. Time is a problem. ( I also have a oil leaking into c. b. points but that'a another post)
thanks P

It is a good idea to change the oil anyway after a couple of years as it tends to emulsify.

If you are happy with the seal for now then you might just as well drain both sides and refill with fresh oil to spec. Most fork oil has "seal sweller"in it to improve the seal but I am not sure it does much good.

I have heard of bikes which have been tied down springing a leak from the fork seals.
