piston ring question

I have an econo set ready to be put in - but the problems begin there. No markings.... NONE!

the top two are identical with a chamfer on the inside (piston side) and the oil scraper is the one piece with a spring inside but, despite being identical on the outside, one of the inside edges is thicker than the other. Seems like there should be a specific order and direction to each, but damned if I can tell.

I suspect chamfer up for top, then down for 2nd, but have no idea for the oil ring. This would seem to be the standard for most automotive rings installations I could find on the internet - but I had a few locals saying both the same direction or it doesn't matter.

should i just get a set of hepolites instead?

cheers

For unmarked rings the general rule is that the compression rings act to seal the compressed gasses above the piston and so are oriented up while the oil ring scrapes excess oil from the cylinder wall so the oil will not go into the combustion chamber and so are pointed down.

so then, which way would be down on the oil scraping ring??? the thin inside or the thick inside lip to the bottom? they look the same on the outside!

top two compression rings should face chamfer up then

i wonder why so many automotive sites recommend to do one each way - and our local shop kinda flip-flopped on which way to put them in, initially he said the same direction for both, then went with one each way - bloody confusing!

thanks for the reply

Again, generally the inside bevel points in the direction of the scraper edge. On the compression rings the inside bevel points up whereas on oil rings the bevel should point down. If there is no inside bevel, then oil rings can go either way. Double check if your rings don't have a dot (up).

To find the dot (upper side) you may need to look with a magnifying glass and a bright light.
