Replacing Steering/Fork Lock Cylinder

I need help on procedure to remove steering or fork lock on my 1971 TR6R. I have a replacement with grub screw with a hex head. I believe once I have the old lock out, I put in the new lock and then install the new grub screw and knock off the hex head and push in the plug.

Do I have to take the handle bars off and remove headlight? It looks like the procedure would be to remove the headlight, drill out the plug and then what?

Any help would be appreaciated.

Thanks

Bob

Once the screw is out, you can simply knock out the old slug

Hi Landshark,

It would be a good idea to remove the headlight for access. When I replaced my lock, I simply drilled out the old grub screw with an undersize drill and then hammered a torx bit in the hole and unscrewed the remainder of the grub screw. (You could use an easyout if you have one to hand)

It's good you mentioned that you are meant to knock the hex head off the the bolt, I didn't know that, but now you've mentioned it, it seems obvious

Thanks

Thanks all, what had me sorta of stumped was I could not see that the existing grub screw had a slot for a small slot screw driver. The new grub screw I got had a hex or normal looking 6 sided bolt head. I understand once it is inplace, you knock off the head (connected by a thin stem to the screw). Once I had the headlight off and the thin metal cap drilled out (careful not to damage the threads inside) I saw the old grub screw had a slot, so it was simple to remove and then knock out the the old lock cylinder.
