Petrol Tank Circle Vibration Pads

The small circle pads that hide under the tank and sit between the tank and frame (keeps the tank off the frame) popped off my 71 Bonneville. I found the pad, but can't figure out for the life of me where it fits back in. Anybody have any ideas?

Hi Will,

I assume to mean the rubber bung things that plug into the holes in the gusset plate at the front of the frame. (See photo, it's the rear one)
Failing that I guess you mean the rubber strip (see the other photo) that sits under the tank (there should be two of them)
The rubber strips sit wherever you want, one at the front and one at the back of the tank, you should be able to see the witness marks on the frame top tube where they used to sit.

I hope this helps

PS: The photos are of my 72 so it should be the same

Webby, that does help, thanks.

One more question for you: I haven't taken my tank off yet. Can you give me an idea on where the two studs at the nose of the tank are? I have a book but no pictures.

Thanks again,

Will

Two bolts fit up under the front of the tank and connect a flat cross bar that simply serves to keep the tank from flexing. The cross bar sits under the frame and is not connected to anything else

That would be it! In the factory they called it a panting strip.

Is that strip fitted to both the large european tank & the smaller US tank? (I think I need to make one)

Thanks Derek,

I thought that the large UK tank had one but not the 2 1/2 gallon US, (mine's a US model) The bolt holes are there so I might knock one up just for the hell of it!

Good Luck

Thanks for the help. This is my first bike, and looking up into a big mess of metal, wires, tank and frame with no real idea where the bolts are is tuff.

No worries Will,

I started my 72 Bonnie in January this year, it started as a large box of bits! (and it's my first real resto!)
Feel free to ask as many questions as you like, there is always someone out there who knows the answer.
It would also be a good idea if you buy yourself the workshop manual and parts catalogue, they are available from most Triumph specialists and are not very expensive.

Good Luck with yours
