Tranny whine

I have a slight whining sound when in third gear at about 3000 rpm coming from my tranny. I am wondering what this indicative of. Just worn gears, or maybe lay shaft or main bearings. Bike shifts fine. Does not pop out of gear or anything else odd. My guess is that it could go like this for many more miles, but am curious what the more experienced on the forum would suggest. Better ear plugs maybe???

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Don't know about yours, but...........that's how I know that my '70 is in 3rd gear!! Can't say for sure what causes yours, but mine's been doing it for some years now. As to my '02 Trophy, it whines in all the gears and I'm hoping it's just the chain.

....and the "village idiot" wears earplugs as well: Jim

Ken,

Like Jim, I'd be guessing it to be a gear meshing thing. As Jim points out, some trannys and diffs can whine for years, with no serious consequences.

I'd be doubtful it was bearings as they rumble rather than whine, and get noisier very quickly. Also, if it was a bearing, the noise would follow you through the gearbox.

If it worries you, check your 3rd gear for wear through the case hardening. RR
