Speedometer question

Hi. I have a 69 TR6C. The Speedometer cable spins in a clock-wise direction. The Speedometer(grey faced Smith) doesn't work. If I spin the cable in a counter clock-wise direction it works?????? In bringing this bike back to life I installed a new cable. The old one was missing. Does anyone know what direction the cable should spin?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Mike.

Hi willywmike,

I don't know in what direction the cable should spin but have you replaced the speedo or the drive gearbox ? I know that there are several differences depending upon the year of manufacture.

No. The Speedometer and drive box are what was on the bike. Maybe I'll try running the cable counter clock-wise to see if the odometer mileage decreases.
Thanks
Mike.

What's the number at the bottom of the face? My parts book lists the 68 as SM5001/06, yours is likely meant to be a higher number than that.

Hello again willywmike,

I've just had a look at my 72 bonnie (I hope I can get the cable back on!) and the cable turns counter clockwise if you are looking at it from the bottom face of the speedo.

I hope this helps

You cable should be turning in the same direction as the needle moves which is of course clockwise

Correct, clockwise if you are sitting on the bike looking at the speedo or down the cable.
