Gearbox sprocket leak

After my first gearbox oil change I have quite a bit of gear oil leaking when on the side stand where the gearbox sprocket is. The oil is leaking on the chain and dripping down the primary side. My motorcycle is a 1972 T120V 5 speed.

I was looking through the parts manual and the shop manual and I am a little unclear on which seals to order and how to go about this.

Can I get the sprocket seal on the gearbox out by taking out the clutch assembly, removing the sprocket and getting to the seal that way?

Does anyone have a list of parts I will need for this venture?

Yep, Thats how you get to it. Don't know if your part #'s would be the
same as mine.
You'll need a primary case gasket and a Clutch door gasket.
The 6 sloted door screws can be eVil hidious to remove.
It's best to use a small punch and a good whack sideways to start
them turning. It's also a good idea to renew the oil seal in the
clutch door.

Thanks. I actually have both of those manuals and they are what I use for any and all repairs. I have the clutch door seal and the primary seal already, I just want to make sure I order all of the right parts to cut down on downtime with the motorcycle.

The picture for the 5 speed is a little unclear to me, do I need 2 of the 60-3500 (D3500) seals, is that it to stop the leak? Are there any other seals I should replace while I am in there? I have read how the 72' 5 speed doesn't have a certain o-ring that the others have, not sure which o-ring that is.

Plewsy, I have watched all of your videos, they are quite a good resource. Keep em coming!

hmm, you might be confusing the bearing for a seal. They do look
kinda similar in the drawing. I was flipping through the 72 manual above.
Page 89 shows the clutch door with oil seal.

I wrote the part # wrong in the previous post and corrected it. They are definitely oil seals. I just want to make sure they are the right seals to replace to get rid of this annoying leak.

Also, does anyone know where this seal goes? Part # 60-3512 halfway down the page, it is called a "Oil seal 5 speed gearbox sprocket" but I dont see it in the manual or parts listing.

Matt,

This is a common problem. It won't hurt to change the seals, but you'll find the oil is getting out down the spline the front sprocket sits on.

There are no oil seals fitted to your model, so on reassembly you'll need to liberally coat the spline and sprocket with RTV silicone.
With an ounce of luck, you'll come away leak free. RR

I just went through the same reseal on my 73 TR7 V and I wish I had thought about the silicone on the spline trick because I do that on my old Jeep transfer case output spline.. May need to take it back apart.
Does it help to put the bike on the main stand to lower the oil level at the spline?

It won't leak on the centre stand, and to all intents and purposes, you could ignore the thing and just top up the gear box here and there. It ain't going to be a clean bike though. If you lay it on the side stand for any length of time, grab a bucket!! RR

Thanks so much. So you say there are no oil seals? I dont 2 oil seals # 60-3512? So I take the sprocket out and just RTV the splines for the sprocket and I should be good.

Could you give me a quick rundown of what you did and what parts you needed other than a primary gasket and a clutch door gasket? That would be a huge help.
