Point-Type Ignition system (Kick Start no battery))

Gents-

Please look at the picture attached; I could really use some help configuring this correctly. I need to reinstall a new 12v coil and wanted to make sure everything is correct and then use a strobe light to time the bike….

We Could Hazzard a Guess.

If you don't tell us what kind of bike, year, model, polarity, ignition system, modifications etc. etc., how do you expect to get sound advise? - Are we talking a prewar Harley or a competition trail bike.

Are you going from 2 coils to 1. It looks like your diagram has two sets of points as with the two coil ignition. I don't think you can wire up both sets of points to one terminal and have it work right. I think you would need one set of points and a rotor with two lobes so it fires twice for each revolution of the cam to run the single coil. You smart guys correct me if I'm wrong.

A single 12v coil works fine with both points. That's what I'm running! Not really a problem, but it does have what's known as a "wasted spark". Both plugs spark at the same time, but twice as often.
Check this out:

This is for a pos. ground.....

Hope this helps!

OOps! my bad. Now that I visualize it, I can see how the points won't interfer with each other. For some reason, I was imagining the trailing set being colsed when the lead set would be opening thereby effectively shorting it out. The reality is they both would open and close while the other set was opened by the lobe so would work. Hey it was late when I was mulling it over. Sorry for the confusion.

Got the wiring diagram from http://www.thehorsebc.com and they have others....
Looks like it'll work provided you have your terminals isolated from the studs using the nylon spacers. Looks like you have that right too from the picture.
My bike is pos. ground and I have the points and condensor on the pos. coil terminal.
Pretty sure neg. ground would be opposite.
Johnny

P.S. Jimmy, I was kind of thinking the same thing and was wondering if strobe timing would still work. Had to go turn the engine over slowly and watch it all happen in slow-mo to understand it!
