How does one use a v/ohm meter to check if the system is charging?

Set the voltmeter to at least 15v DC, connect it across the battery terminals. Don't forget that the positive side is ground.

With the engine running check the voltage across the battery at idle. When you rev the engine the voltage should increase to about 14.5v

You must also connect an ammeter into the system.

Disconnect the fuse ,connect ammeter between the two wires. That is to say the ammeter will be in place of the fuse.
Start the engine you should show at least eight amps.
If you show very little amperage it indicates a bad rectifier, or possibly bad alternator rotor maybe even a poor ground at the rectifier.Seldom is it a bad stator but it is a posibility.
Yuo can show all of the volts you want but that does not indicate the system is charging the battery tou can have rising volts at rising speeds even with a internaly shortes stator. Volts will not charg a battery you must have sufficient amperage

Hope this helps.

Looking at some schematics and books. Does the fuse need to be on the positive terminal to the battery before it is grounded to the frame. I looked over mine and the fuse is after the negative terminal
thanks just read through and also having charging problems

The fuse is actually before the negative terminal.

The ground wire should be attached to the engine. Also to the rectifier, the diode or heatsink, headlamp, taillamp and condensor mounting.
Most electrical problems are caused by a poor ground or lack of a ground to the engine.

If the source volts are there, there will be sufficient current to charge the battery providing the battery is ok. If there is insufficient current the voltage will drop to the battery terminal voltage when connected.

Double is right. Lead acid batteries like to be charged from a constant voltage source. Anything from 13.8 to 14.5 should be fine.

If the battery is two or three years old, you may want to replace it. They do have a limited life.

Tom
