voltage bouncing at idle

72' bonnie OIF

Hello folks,

My bonnie is behaving badly of late, notably voltage at the battery at idle bouncing from 12V to a split second at 19v and another split second at 9v, then back to 12V. When the bike is warm the eratic voltage is worse.

When coasting on the bike, it is not running smooth, like someone is giving it a little shove, then pulling it back then shoving it again. When i open the throttle, it seems smoother but at low speeds its jerky.

The battery seems to run flat over time, and last night with lights on, and all this misbehaviour it would stall when idling at intersections. last night the battery voltage had dropped to 10v though.

Any clues.

(i load tested the battery and it seems ok)

voltage regulator? zener diode? The jerkiness might me mis-balanced carbs...

Zener diode and all of its wiring and connectors could stand inspection. Loose and corroded on the wiring is what you are
looking for there.

Do not be embarrased ever. Anyway, do you have your original
air boxes? If so it is bolted up on the right hand side air box.
It uses it as a heat sink. Earlier rides had a finned heat sink on
the front of the bike on the forks below the head light to get
cool air to pass over the diode.
