Oil Leak, Cooked Coil, Hard Clutch T140

Three questions about my new '78 T140E:
I realize it's difficult to tell where oil is leaking from a photo, but I'd appreciate an opinion. My rocker box gaskets and rocker spindles are clearly leaking. The oil looks clean. I have oil collecting at the bottom of the cylinder (see photo) that is dirtier. I ordered gaskets and seals for the rocker box, but now I'm thinking that leak could be from the down tube. Or could that be rocker oil that just gets dirty on the way down. Sure would like to know so I could get the parts, take off the head and do the tubes at the same time as the boxes. Any opinions?

Secondly, I've been working on the wiring and stupidly left the key on when I went in for supper. When I came back there was that burning electric smell, the battery was dead and the right coil was very, very hot. I've had trouble starting since then, but I believe coils are either good or bad with no in between. Maybe I just don't have the starting sequence down, or maybe it's because I have the air cleaners off and it's getting too much air. I don't know. Could I have ruined something electrical?

Third, I've been spoiled by my Commando because I bought it with a teflon coated clutch cable. The Triumph clutch is a very hard pull. I oiled it, but still tough. Are the coated cables available for these bikes, and is there a source? Anything else I can do to ease the pull?

Hi rmak,
That looks like your pushrod oil seal is leaking all the necessary gaskets should be in a headset.
When you have the head off, you might as well check the ring gap and change base gasket.
The base gasket will be a separate order, I don't think you get one in a head set.

If the coil was very hot you should replace it, have a close look at ignition circuit for melted wires.

Most cables are plastic lined now, you may find it is poor routing of the cable,
you should also adjust the clutch push rod.

Thanks Plewsey!
Is there any way to temporarily slow the pushrod tube leak for the rest of the riding season? Winter would be an ideal time to do the top end work.

Sorry rmak, I has to be a fix, but if you can put up with the leak and keep an eye on your oil that would be ok!

rmak,

Just check your oil level every 100 miles. I made it a smooth 4,000
miles before I fixed my leaks on the rocker boxes. And yes the oil
made it all the way down to the top of transmission. What a mess.
