T140 gear oil. Type and capacity?

Hi, I'm John from Virginia (USA). Great site here.

My bike is a 1979 T140E that has just run for the first time in about 9 years.

It's my first Triumph, and I don't have a manual.

Anyone know the capacity and type of gear oil? And do i just add it in the little screw port on the left side of the case?

Thanks in advance.

JR

Hi Jayar1234, and welcome to TR
The amount of oil in the box is 7/8 pint (500cc)
some people use gear oil, I have always used engine oil.
if you look at your gear box drain plug, there is another smaller bolt, it is a level plug,

It's a good idea to get a manual and a parts catalogue. They are cheap and invaluable. I'm using an 80W90 gear oil.

It figures you'd beat me to the draw Mr. Plewsy. Where's the video?

Hello John from Virginia,

Welcome to the forum. And if I do say a rather nice bike you
have. I am rather fond of that year.

And yes 500cc of gear lube, a standard 80-90w, but make sure
it is not a hypoid gear lube, as for a rear differental. Just get
the stuff for transmissions.

just to say that the Pints will be Imperial Pints not USA - so 500 cc or do a check!

I'm not sure what the difference is but using the level plug will be safer

great info, everyone. Thanks so much. I'm sure I'll be calling in you a lot as I start putting some mileage in the bike. Sure is fun so far.

ordering my manual today. until then, can you clarify what you mean by rear differential. sorry, i'm a newbie.

are you saying there would be three types of fluid for the drivetrain on this bike? (motor oil, gear oil and transmission oil)

my setup is different than the one pictured, but I assume i add gear oil on the left side. I don't have the level plug that I can tell. At least not on the side next to the kick starter.

Here's a pic of the bike, for what it's worth.

Thanks!

Only two types of oil for the box either 20/50w engine oil, or 80-90w but not hypoid gear oil.
to fill use the small inspection cap near the kickstart.
The level plug is part of the drain plug, I'm sure you will have one

Jayar,

Oh heaven no. I just mentioned the rear differental hypoid oil that
Cars use so you do not get the wrong lube. Most counter part
jockeys do not know the difference anymore and will hand you
anything to get you out the door.

You see there is standard gear oil, what you need. Then there is
hypoid gear oil. This has a friction modifier and additives to polish
the hypoid gear as it strips off the oil from the ring gear. If this
hypoid lube is used in a normal transmission it will shorten the life
span of the needle bearing.

You will the transmission back up on the right side, there is a plug
right above the kick start. The drain and level plug are on the
bottom of the transmission. You will see three plugs under your
engine. The one in the front is the sump drain for the crankcase,
it is at an angle. The one in the rear is long and is the detend for
the shifter. Note some years do not have this, and it is just a flat
boss. Up from that there is a plug that has another plug tapped
into it. This is the transmission drain and level plugs.
