First I would like to thank everyone here on all of the information I have found on this board

now on to the problem
I have just finished putting my rebuilt motor back in the bike and took it out for a ride. I noticed blue smoke coming from the left exhaust
other than the blue smoke the bike ran beautifly
is this normal during the break in period?

Assuming new rings and valve guides were part of the rebuild a certain amount of smoke may be expected before the rings are full seated. This should diminish as the rings begin to wear in. However, you don't indicate whether there is a just a wisp on acceleration or a continuous pall blocking out the sunlight. As long as there aren't any funny noises etc, I'd be giving it a couple of hundred miles and monitor for a change.
