5 Speed Front Sprocket Spanner?

Does a standard socket fit on the front sprocket nut on a 5 speed T140? If so, what size?
The manual calls for a Triumph issue spanner that is pretty expensive, let alone quite difficult to find.

Good Question

I couldn't find a socket that large that was also deep enough to clear the shaft. Necessity being the mother of invention, I made mine. I cut the hex nut pattern out of a piece of 3/16" plate which I welded to a piece of pipe. Another piece of plate at the other end of the pipe to engage my1/2" socket and a bit of care and filing to ensure a snug fit and some paint. I was concerned that too much torque would be required and gnarl the plate material but it worked like a charm.
Hope this helps.

Nut Dimension

Hey Beemie,
Not sure how you guys measure in your neck of the woods but I get 7/8" across the flats. I had tried a 3/4" drive socket but even they aren't deep enough. Deep sockets in those sizes are special order and costly

Measurement would be flat to flat across the middle and 7/8" isn't really that big, so I may not be understanding you. Did you mean that one flat measures 7/8" long? How many sides on the nut?

The Triumph tool may run about $45 or so plus shipping, so that should buy one heck of a socket.

Thanks,
How much would you estimate the shaft to protrude from the face of the nut?

It's surprising that the oem spanner only takes a rod through the body to work it.
The newer Thunderbird requires quite a torque on that nut.
