I don't know what I have

I thought I was going to by a 1969 Tiger TR6 but when I checked the serial number this is what I saw:

The number on the frame matches. The bike fired up after a couple of kicks, puked a couple of tablespoons of oil out the breather but sounded pretty good mechanically. Took a couple of laps around the driveway and it shifted smooth enough but I do see a bunch of niggling details that need sorting. Meanwhile, I don't really know what I bought other than it seems fairly complete and in need of new tires and a clean front rim.

I kneel at the altar of the wise ones and ask for your wisdom.

Do a search on "TR6SR" and you'll find (at least) two or three threads where the "SR" model fact-checking has been discussed at length.

The engine number stamping looks original and would indicate a 64 model yr with a build date around Dec 63. TR6SR designation would also fit.
I assume this the same bike as shown on your other thread. Those photos appear to show a 1969 (or possibly 70) Trophy that has recently been rebuilt.
Could it be that the person who rebuilt the bike had access to a load of 69/70 parts which were used to complete the machine? A photo of the left hand side of the engine would help.

Thank you, I had done that search before but had neglected to read the T120SR thread. A fascinating read that left me no wiser about my TR6 purchase but somewhat enlightened on Johnson Motors and T120s.

Since the frame and the motor match I suppose it could be a hybrid restoration that found its way into the seller's hands as a 69 TR6. More pictures will follow and it will be a fine project, both in returning it to its original form and in the sleuthing that goes along with that work.

If the cases are originally 64, the screw threads will be BSF. If 1969, threads will be UNF.
Not only will this help you decide which yr it is, but may avoid the wrong screws/nuts being used and destroying the case threads (expensive).
Consider sticking with the 69 front brake. Much, much better.

That's really this issue at this point, determining the engine year so I won't buy/use the wrong parts. More pictures:
A better look at the primary for those that know how to tell which year:

A look at the frame stamping, left downtube adjacent the tank bolt:

A look at the embossed number on the left neck:

At eyeball level that number appears to F 8204 but there's a lot of buildup to peer through (plus bifocals). In any case it's going to keep me busy and offer a bit of joy as well so it's all good.

No inspection cover on the primary case indicates pre-68. Not proof that this a 64 engine but beginning to look like it.

Could easily be '69 bodywork and front brake (or front end) bolted up to a '64 frame.

Either way, it's not original.

GPZ, thank you. I've followed your bikes for a couple of years now and appreciate the stunning objects you turn out.

I'm not too worried about the extra bits being incorrect as long as the core seems proper. As a long term project it gives me some leeway in pursuit of a nice running bike that I can have some fun with. It does seem essential that I establish the engine so I'll be able to pursue the proper tach and speedometer; and, also be able to tune it for decent running. No factory service manual yet so I'm groping in the dark for information and this forum seems the place to pursue that.
