Hi all, just joined up on the site and looking to chat with likeminded triumph riders.I am going to build a tr6 based off roader and am looking for advice, the offroading i will be doing is on English green lanes so nothing too heavy but i wanted to know if any of you guys would recomend any frame strength mods before i go ahead with the project, any advice welcome.

Hi,

Welcome.

It sounds a very interesting project. What year TR6 are you using as a basis?

Fyi (although you may know?), Triumph produced a 750cc OIF TR7T Tiger Trail in '81-83. There was also a 650cc version in '82 (TR65T). I think these 750cc machines were the ones used by the Royal Military Police display team?

Quite a 'modern' appearance. Are you hoping for this type of styling, or something more traditional?

Ciao,
Geoff

Thanks for the reply Geoff, what i am hoping to build is perhaps more similar to the 750 shown .I am picking the frame up this weekend hopefully and at the moment am unsure of its year ,i do want an oif model and not quite sure if the tr6 came like this or not so perhaps i might have to revise my ideas on this.I remember when these 750s were introduced but i dont recall ever seeing one on the road ,i suppose it was brought out to sell against the xt 500 ? I will also be going to some classic scrambles meetings to look at and take photos of triumphs so that i can get some more idea of parts to use such as mudguards e.t.c

Hi, I´m actually in the process of turning my own TR6R from 1969 into something along the same lines. Nothing too racey, just a increase in ride height of a few inches, trail tyres, sump guard, uprate the suspension etc...I need the bike for touring and green / muddy brown lanes. Any parts that I cut or change will not be the originals as the bike is in original condition and I don´t want to ruin its´ history, so the plan is to buy new old mudguards and such and alter these.
It is still in the planning stage , but, the idea is slowly coming together and I think I know where I´m going with it...! One of my biggest probs are the tyres. I need something that can handle the offroad and yet still give a desent grip on the tarmac whilst keeping the retro looks.
Anyway good luck with yours, it´ll interesting to watch your progress.

They were, but were painted all white not yellow, didn't have black finished engines and were single carb.
I was in the team in 1982.

The early 80's Tiger Trails were great fun to ride but I wouldn't want to spend my own money on one (unless it was really cheap, like almost free) because they were not very reliable......

They suffered from terrible vibration through the handlebars which spoiled an otherwise very comfy ride, they handled nicely and sounded tremendous.
Brakes were appaling though.
