This question is mainly for Roy (Dagad)
Roy, you keep warning us about making sure the mounting points are double welded otherwise they will crack. Well, I just ordered a pair off a firm on the internet and thought they were the double welded ones but they're not. The bolt mounting bracket (about 3-4 inches long) is simply welded to the silencers. Now you've got me worried. I don't want to try to return them as I don't think there's a return policy and also I'd not only lose the shipping charge but I'd have to pay for the shipping back. So, I am going to try them and see what happends. To try and reduce the risk of cracking, should I try to place some type of (heat resistant) vibration absorption pad between the silencers and the mounting brackets on the frame to stop them cracking as you predict they will?
Has anyone else had problems with these cracking?

I'm wondering if there is a difference between Norton peashooters and Norton style peashooters. I got a set of replica Norton peashooters 25 yrs ago and the welds are fine on the brackets. I got them from Bubs enterprises in Cal. Granted they only have about 6000 mi on them. But Okla. got the worst roads in the world. Pot holes, rippled roads etc. They have a about a 1" weld fore and aft top and bottom., single bead. Just my experience with them.

Well, I fitted them today and am pleased to say they fit perfectly and sound fantastic. Much louder than the standard ones and also look much nicer being shorter.
Okiecityflash, I think the original Norton ones don't have a bracket welded to the silencer but simply have lugs that the screws screw into. Whereas the ones I have have brackets about 3 inches long with 2 solid welds all along the top and bottom of the bracket. Anyway, I'm paranoid they'll crack so glad to hear you've not had problems with yours. But they were about half the price of the others I've seen so even if they last half as long, who cares?

Cat, I don't think they're 1.5, I think the diameter is slightly less than that. If anyone is interested, here is a link to the ones I bought:

Mine have a welded on slot type affair I've been calling a bracket. They bolt to the stock plates that are fastened with the rear footpegs. I had to re-jet, change throttle valves and aircleaners( 1978 emission b.s.) They fit my stock (1 -3/8") push in pipes. I didn't exactly know what DAGAD mean't by double welded. Top and bottom? 2 beads? They sure make a difference when you get them dialed in don't they. Ride safe

The ones you have sound like mine.
I think I know what Dagad meant-I have seen some with like an oval plate (which is the bracket with 2 holes in it for the bolts) welded onto the silencers. I think what he's saying is the Norton ones don't have any sort of "bracket" and simply have 2 "lugs" where the bolts go. I can see how these lugs might crack off the silencer body.
Anyway, I have not rejetted, thinking I'll try them and see how I go. To tell the truth,, I see no problems with the running of the bike. It seems more powerful but that might just be psychlogical due to the noise? I've got 200 jets on Mark II Amals. Not sure if the 200's are standard or are bigger than normal. Could I do damage to my valves by not rejetting?

Hi Peter, back from the post TT at Mallory Park. Cold and windy but a great days racing!
Yes you have it exactly about the mountings, sounds like yours will be OK.
Main jets std are 190, so you are up 1 which should be fine. Enjoy YOUR new bike! Roy.

One prpblem with rejetting the '79 is that I tried to use my stock mufflers and it would not run. I guess if I want to use them for the neighbors sake I'll have to redial the carbs. Oh Well. Maybe some day if they snivel . Thanks for the info on brackets.

If it's any help, I put these on my bike back in the 80s, and they've lasted up to today . . . the lugs never cracked, the bodies have rusted through finally though.
