hello,
I've been out of town. I hope tonight to get some answers. THe bike seems to die in any configuration. lights on or off. but only when i try to advance throttle. in or out of gear. I remember a couple backfires. I also remember before it started to stall that day. Going up a hill and advancing the thrttle and it would seem to miss. like hesitate or mild loss of power. Like it was out of gas. but there was plenty there.
thanks for the help

i hooked in a voltmeter and battery reads 12.5 out of the bike. I put the battery in and started it and rev the engine up and i don't see an increase only a momentary .2 drop and a steady 12.5 volts. i didn't try any of the lights. I still want to look at the points for any spark. Time is tough.
thanks

This seems too obvious but I had sililar symtoms and I changed the plugs and it smoothed right out.

Condensers?

Check the points and see if they are pitted. If so it could be bad condensers.

If the battery volts didn't increase to say 13.5 - 14v when revved (3-3500rpm) then it would look like its not charging. However, the fact that it is not dropping significantly below 12.5 means at that voltage you shouldn't suffer ignition failure. If you have just charged the battery off the machine, it may be that it runs down.
I would check the condensers as it is a rev related fault but also investigate why the battery isn't charging as this may be why the problem happens after time. Check the battery volts when the problem is present.
Good luck!

howdy,
checked condensers and checked fine. Charged battery, new points, plugs. i ran it for about twenty minutes in different light configurations. The ammeter on the bike showed a charge in the off positon and pilot, but in bright it seemed to only swing right up to neutral, it didn't seem to break over to the positive side. After ride checked volts on battery still 12.5.
I don't think i solved the charging problem.

Now i noticed a valve flutter or tapping while accelerating and down shifting. I am going to let it sit overnight and adjust if neccessary tomorrow.
thanks for the help

How did you check the condensers?

Valve settings could very well be a problem.

Replaced points, plugs, and charged battery. Bike is running great. I haven't been able to get my hands on a good ammeter to test alternator, but I can say that the ammter on the bike shows charge at cruise, about 50 mph, with lights off. In pilot or high it doesn't swing over to positive side. It shows mostly negative or neutral. I rode twice for about 20 minutes with lights in different configurations and battery still shows 12.5 with bike turned off. I am going to try and see if the alternator is putting out about 8 amps and then assume the battery is bad. Also checked condensers and they are OK.
Blew a fork oil seal last ride!
More fun!!!
