T140 hub. Speedo drive stuck

I'm trying to rebuild a T140E hub (disc) and ned to get the steel gearbox drive out of the alli hub. No tool I have will do it.

I'm planning to stick it in the oven and heat it up.

How long for and how hot?

the drive is left hand thread Dave, and also acts as a bearing retainer, the wifes hair drier should get her hot enough to move they are usually only pinch tight

Just to confirm.

Left Hand Thread is the reverse of "normal".

The speedo drive is on the RHS of the bike.

I've tried it both ways but will try the hairdrier first. I have a nasty feeling that it needs a bit more oomph than I'm using but I don't want to risk damage. If I do damage it, I'd rather damage the steel.

I'm using a set of Stilson type grips but no luck so far.

will let you know how it goes

cheers

Hi DAVE M, yes left-hand, you go in the normal tighten direction, clockwise as you are looking at it.
If you want to heat it, pour a 1/2gallon of boiling water on to the hub.
A hair dyer might be a little under-hot, an electric paint stripper would be better.
You need to heat the alloy up quickly. You could also pour a little cold water onto the steel bit after heating alloy.

edit:- I'm not familiar with your wheel, I have a conical, a few pics would help :-)

off to Screwfix for a heatgun this afternoon then.

I'll try to post a pic but it's pretty simple - a hub with no frills and a "cup" cast into it where the steel drive part goes.

Done it!

Thanks to all.

FYI I had a 2Kw hot air gun on it for 20 mins before it came free.
That was half the hub, held in the vice by the disc bolts. The garage filled full of acrid smoke due to the WD40 and oil that I used before.

Now to tidy up the grip marks and get the bearings out before sending the hubs off for a nice set of stainless rims and spokes.

The ruddy summer will be over before i get this thing rolling

Go Dave, next stop Alf Hagons emporium, I built wheels for my 76 bonnie, and just have the rear one to true up, I have already resigned myself to next year the guys on this forum helped out a lot with that, shame about the anglers The Dove is a good alternative however.

hi,

I'm getting the wheels done at Central Wheels, they'll fit tyres as well so it's just a case of posting them off and waiting for a set of fully ready wheels to be delivered.

I fitted Hagon Custom Stainless shocks.

Sadly, the Dove was demolished years ago (5?). Pubs are closing here at the rate of maybe 7 a week. The Plasterer's and Eastgate have gone as well. The Retreat is still there

I used to pop into the Rising Sun in town, used to be a bit of a biker pub, but it shut a couple of months ago.

My local has always been the Three Tuns - used to be very bike orientated in the late 70's and 8o's, you'd have old paddies at one end and the HA at the other. Now it's a bunch of lager drinking tossers mainly.
