it's alive

well it's finished started in february and kicked it over today
"It " is a 1973 t14ov when i got it it had grass growing between the swingarm and frame dirt dauber and wasp nests in the engine it was covered in mud and grease disassembled every nut and bolt including forks and rear shocks thanks to the help of several people on this forum that provided good advice and the judicial use of the search feature i was able to find all the advice and parts sources i needed to get it back together and running
i did replace the mikuni carbs it came with back to amals and put in a boyer electronic ignition in place of the points

it started on the third kick and took about 5 minutes to adjust the idle but there is one problem an oil leak out of the stator cover that i don't understand because all gaskets are new

now if you are still reading this post let me say i am not a mechanic if you are new to this forum and are thinking about a project like this then by all means dive in with the help available on this forum and the numerous shops around the country that specialize in old brit bikes there is no reason to be wary of rebuilding an old bike it was a fun project i called it my lifetime project when the wife was watching lifetime on the boob tube i was working on the bike just beware of the person selling the bike mine was listed on ebay as a numbers matching all original running bike the numbers don't match frame built in jan 73 motor in oct 73 bike definite not original, all the mounting brackets and studs had been ground off the frame no coils coil tray or battery box no side covers and no way an engine full of insects was going to run stay away from old97chpoppers the guy is a liar and a cheat

i will definitely do it again next time paying more attention to pre purchase research on the bike

this thread is useless w/o pictures

congrats connersw !

and i have no idea how it could be possible for one of the fine pieces of machinery to have an oil leak , especially with new gaskets P)

cheers Woody

Thata Boy!

Aways good to here two things. One someone over comes the
lack of wrench turning into something that they can be proud of
in the end. You will love that bike forever.

Second is that someone actually found the search function.
Wow I did not see that one headed my way. Good job on that
one.

And of course, as far a Ebay goes, if you are in a pinch it maybe
the only place to look. But as always, there is the seller's eye and
the buyer's eye. Sellers only see gold and glitter!

Well done connersw
its a great feeling when you get these beasties to roar into life,
the sound and a smell that will stay with you and is quite unique

A smear of silicone around the edge of cover, and a smear of grease in the case (stops it sticking) insert screws a few turns, then push the cover home, nip the screws wipe off excess. Also a tiny smear of silicone on the threads will stop the screws leaking or slackening.

Most of my gaskets are stuck one side and greased the other great for rocker covers.
I have point to point rewired mine, got rid of all the silly lucar connectors, soldering most joints. As I used second hand wire recovered from the roof of a scrapyard van its colour coding no chance ! does it work yes!

post script

just a few hints before i started i bought a haynes service manual a factory service manual and a factory parts manual must haves for this type of project also take lots of pictures before you start paying attention to the routing of cables oil lines and fuel lines and how any linkages are oriented as you disassemble take pictures of how everything comes apart then make drawings i filled half a spiral notebook with drawings and measurements especially of the way any spacers are installed and even then you will find yourself needing to refer to the parts and service manuals
