oil level.

my first triumph. 1971 650 bonny. oil in frame. my questions are this...the dipstick is gone. should you be able to see the oil with the cap off? also whats a realistic highway speed that this can handle. generallt about a 150 km trip to town and back. also is thhe oil that comes out of the tube on the primary side normal? itr just blows a little when running and then drips when sitting. i had some confusion with the haynes manual i have. is the engine oil and the primary oil on the 1971 seperate? any help would be great.

Hi waynemags, If you can see the oil through the filler hole thats enough, or stick your finger in and point down
It should cruise at around 65-70mph if it is setup right.
The primary oil and engine oil are the same, but you must top up the chain case now and again.

Breather dripping

Your breather should not drip any oil, a couple of things could cause it
1, if bike had not been started for some time, it could have wet sumped!
2, too much oil in primary chain case!
3, more serious it could be the rings on there way out.

it drips qiute a bit. would a compression test be a way to tell? i was thinking about the primary level. how much should be in there? i was going to drain it and refill. i have a book but its very minimal on the info. im guessing that the filler hole is on the rear brake side of the bike on top of the primary cases.

1, yes a compression test is a good starter for ten.
2, from empty you should replace with 1/3pint of engine oil. ( don't forget the plug )
3, yes just behind the barrels on top of the chain case.

primary-side, or primary chain-case, are the same thing.
With the bike stood up level, the primary chain adjust plug is the level plug! fill till it dribbles out.
Best way ,start from scratch, drain and refill with 1/3 of a pint engine oil.

edit:- I meant to ask what type of ignition that is? do you know what other mods are done to the motor?

its a magneto just not sure yet what kind. just got it yesterday. as far as i know the engine was done recently. gaskets look new. just did na comp test and was 170 psi both cylinders. the inspection plug you speek of thats the one on the side of the cases correct? just fill it till it dribbles out of there. when riding it today every time came to a stop there was oil on the ground from that hose that come off the top inside of the case. any more thoughts?

No that would be way too much oil.
There's a large screw about mid way on the bottom of the chain case and sits between two of the screws that secure the cover and directly blow the shifter. Remove it and drain all the oil out of the chain case.
Now replenish the oil by adding 1/3 of a pint to the chain case via the large filler plug that's 1 1/4 inch in diameter that is located on top of the chain case proper, just behind the cylinder barrel and above the shifter.
That way you are sure you have the right amount of oil and then you can verify if oil is still coming from the vent.
Use a tape measure to check your oil level in the oil tank. that way you are sure. The minimum is at about 4 inches with the max at about one inch from the neck

That's lots of compression. You must be running with high compression pistons

Hi there,
don't get more confused, but, it looks (& by year your gear shift is on the right ?). with respect 3rdbike the drain is not below the shifter. the primary case (drive case) is on the left of the engine, it should take about 150ml of oil, i put in ml because i noticed you said 150km in your post so assume you live somewhere that is metric. the oil tank is around 2.5 litres. dont forget to prime the sump with a cup of oil tiped into the rocker box
