Pre-war 5T advice

Hello all, I am fairly new to Triumphs and rather than starting with an easy project I am building a 1939 5T from a basket case.

I am currently building the engine which came to me in various boxes and I am not sure if I have the correct timing side main bearing. I ordered a set of main bearings from an online specialist and I have now taken delivery of a shielded timing side bearing and an unshielded drive side one.

I am not sure if this is correct. I know that the post war 5T's had a bearing shield outboard of the bearing but not on the inboard side. The bearing I have been sent is shielded both sides. Is this OK or do I need to change it for a bearing shielded on 1 side only?

Any tips or advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks
JPW

Get a 'replacement parts catalog' for your specific engine. This will get you The correct part numbers. I got my catalog from British Only, hopefully they or another brit bike store can supply you with one. You can go online at British Only to their estore and punch in the part numbers to cross reference what you may be looking for.
MAP is good to as well as the ones mentioned on this forum. I have no experiece with the 39 models other than the green face I get when I see one! Good luck, check in, post often, and tune up!

Sealed bearings are generally sold with seals on both sides. Just pop out the one seal with a small pick or screwdriver and you're good to go. Had the same issue with my '76.

And good luck and be sure and send us some pictures

Re: 39 Main Bearings

Thanks for the replies folks. I do have a 39 parts list and I have also had a look at an old bearing catelogue which lists the bearings for this bike. I do know that I have the correct bearing size, clearance etc. However what is not clear is if it should be shielded or not (note I mean shielded NOT sealed)

The one I have been sent is not a sealed bearing but a shielded one with built in shields. I believe that in the 30's & 40's bearings did not have built in shields but they were a seperate component that you could add if required. Modern bearings come as sealed, shielded on one side, shielded on both sides or unshielded.

The question I have at the moment is, do I need a bearing that is shielded (one or both sides) or open?

I guess I will have to do some more research.

Cheers.

Hi JPW, I'm not familiar with pre war stuff but reckon they are lubed in a similar way, I would go unshielded as they are usually splash fed.
