Petrol Tap Connection to Tank

Dear All,

I've had a leak from around the main tap connection on my '66 T120R so I've decided to buy a new tap and want to make sure it doesn't leak again after I've fit it !
I've a new 'sealing washer' - looks like a metal washer with a rubber insert - which is what it had before. Should I just use the new one or should it have another washer - the reserve tap which doesn't leak looks to have two washers. I've left that alone !

Appreciate your advice.
Cheers

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

You only need the one washer, however (not wanting to insult your inteligence) are you sure it's the tap, or just the threaded part of the tap which screws into the tank? If you can wrap a little plumbers PTFE around the threads of the tap before you install the new (or old) tap.

Thanks Webby,

I bought a new tap really because the old was was a reserve i.e no innner pipe, so had two reserves i.e. none !!......might have been the thread, don't know but last night I fitted the new one with just the one washer as you say. Rightly or wrongly didn't use ptfe tape as I was thinking it might not go down too well will petrol if it got on it. The tank had been painted and the flat surface where the washer sits was not 100% flat so I scrapped some paint off it first. Looks fine now but not put any petrol in yet so it's fingers crossed.

BTW - the old petrol pipe ( marked made in US ) is alot thicker both in size and bore tham the new 1/4'' pipe I've bought - I'm putting double banjo's in the carbs and renewing gaskets etc while I'm at it !!! - won't make any difference to petrol delivery will it ??

Cheers !.........flipping hot here today..........

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
You installed the tap correctly, it's always a good idea to scrape the paint off around the tap otherwise the petrol can get underneath & bugger up your paintwork.
Provided your fuel pipe fits comfortably over the banjos & unions so should have no problem with the fuel delivery, effectively the pipes only top up the float bowls so you don't need a huge amount of fuel flow (thankfully) Anyway as I'm sure you know old Triumphs don't use a lot of fuel.

Nice & warm here in SW France too (35°C)

Hi Jeremy391D, your just down the road
As far as I am aware, Triumphs did not use a standpipe on the reserve tap.
As it has two taps it was up to the user, which side of the tank should be reserve.
Triumph do recommend turning on both taps for high speed motoring

Hi Plewsey,
Yes, not far away - I'm coming up to Durham tonight so even closer !!.....what do you mean by standpipe (sorry, I'm a bit thick !) Reserve tap takes petrol all the way to the bottom of the tank, the other down to only a higher level via a pipe in the tank, am I right ?
Cheers

The weather is not good here its pouring
Yes thats a standpipe, the pipe attached to the "on" tap,
A Triumph tank is saddled over the frame so has two halves, well nearly one side will always drain first if only one tap is used, then the other is used as reserve.

Mate Plewsy mate, sounds like I deserve to get wet..........I'm a plonker, honestly never thought about the two sided thing !!!.....think I better put the old non standpipe back in ? might never get the petrol used on that side if not ?...........best have a look tonight !!!

The rains stopped now here, Jeremy391D.
There should be a filter on the tap itself that goes up into the tank. They are gauze and could be plastic or brass, and they stand about 2" high.

ps the kettles always on
