72 tr6r camshaft help

Hi Guys, i am rebuilding my 72 650 tiger and have replaced the 4 cam bushings as well as everything else, i insalled the crank and cams, put the cases together and the cams turn nicely but have a little end play, installing the inlet cam gear all is well and turns nicely with almost no end play but when i install the timing gear on the exhaust cam and tighten it the cam will not turn at all, i took the gear off again and noticed that if you push on the cam pushing it into the left case then the left cam lobe hits the left case, (the cylinders are not on ) any ideas thanks

Check the length of the new cam bushes in the timing side. The originals are 0.990" long and new pattern ones seem to be a bit longer, so when you tighten the timing wheel it fits snugly on the face of the bush, so a small bit of lathe work is needed. Do you still have the originals to use as datum?

Your tach drive or the plug for the tach drive helps to locate the cam in its proper position.

72 cam problem

hi, the bushing does not come through the case far enough for the gear to contact, maybe thats the problem, its not into the case far enough on the inside, so does not allow the cam to come through enough for the gear to bottom out on the cam ?

Hi ecose, you should have 13-20 thou end float on cams,
It sounds a bit like you have not driven the timing case bushes in far enough.
