Hi guys,

I'm moving across to multiple threads...normally I hang out in the Sports Touring as I have a Sprint ST 1050.

Just purchased a T140E and am starting to get the gear organized for a rebuild.

I've ordered a shop and parts manual from the USA (I'm in Australia). But noticed a wiring harness kit on ebay and Im not sure if it will suit the T140E I purchased. Plus the google searches are not coming up with a definite answer.

According to the engine and frame number (matching) the bike was built in October 1979. Seem there is some confusion (on my part) on exactly when the T140E was built, some have them from 1978 til 1980...I think its late 1979/80 the T140E was built for the USA market...???

The part number on ebay is 54962258, but I found another web site which mentions part # 05-54965505C.

The part manual will most likely be a week or two away from delivery, but would like to grab the one off ebay if its suitable.

Did a quick search on the threads and did not find any conclusive information on wiring harness part numbers.

Any clues....?

The part number that you need is 60-7056.

I'm pretty sure that the E started in 79

and the E has electronic ignition. So I don't know if the older looms will fit

T140E started in '78 whats the first par of you VIN 78 79 had different wiring harness's

I really should learn not to post until I'm fully awake.
The harness you want is part #99-7056 (TRIUMPH) or 54965505 (LUCAS). There is also a reference in the parts book to a rear sub harness #60-7198. I suspect this is for the taillight lead. Information is taken from the '79 Triumph T140E parts book #99-7102. Your bike is a '79
The other harness you mention #54962258 is for a 78 TR7RV,T140V,and T140E. These bikes were positive ground and had a points/coil /condenser ignition. It will not fit or work on your bike without MAJOR alterations.
The T140E model was a mid year change in the '78 model year. I suspect the first T140E was bulit in the Jan 78 (or very near time frame). The E in T140 refers to EPA. The biggest change between the '78 V and E models is the new cylinder head carb setup. Also there were other changes airbox, and styling covers, V model taillight carrier was black while the E model was ifin I remember was polished. The rear fender and frame also have different part numbers.

Now to your bike it is 1979. In looking at our posted picture it shows all the details of a '79
Seat lock, airbox styling cover and emblem, 79 and later front master cylinder, you are missing the lift rail which will have a small rack attached. Another thing for you to note is your rear brake caliper is underhung. On '80 and later T140E's the caliper was above the axle. The 80 model called a 79 1/2 in the USA for legal reasons is in part book 99-7102A
and starts with an XB vin. in reviewing the 79 vin history It appears they were built from
July '78 thru Nov '79 So they were built in both Oct 78 and Oct 79. Since you didnt mention an appromate vin if you have an Oct '78 bike I would guess you Vin is in a NA12XXX or NA13XXX range. If you have a Oct '79 built machine I would guess a vin somewhat like a NA22XXX or NA23XXX range.

Be careful with the wire loom. With due respect for everything that Kadutz has said you must remember that the USA models have differant wirering. Manuals seem to always mention ' Home & general export" models then 'USA' models. I think (please correct me if wrong) that it has to do with indicactors being ON with the head light, such as in the movies.

Glad to be with the real riders group...well, its not in riding condition as yet....but one day

KADUTZ, the vin & engine number is T140ENA14xxx I got my information about the date of manufacture from this web site http://www.t140.com/serial/ which I cannot say would be 100% correct.

Thanks for the advise and part numbers...plus warning on wiring for different models. But in the end I can only go via the manufacturer part numbers and hope it all works...when things go wrong, that's when the fun starts.

I'd need to check with my manual at home but I think the US and Uk ones were wired the same - but (from memory) the Canadian ones have something different about their wiring

I think they have to have DRLs or Daylight Running Lamps/Lights?

I was working on my ignition switch a month or so back and the wiring seems to show the same harness but plugged in diffently?

My parts manual is 99-7102 (october 78) and mentions both USA parts and Home. So I'd guess that the harness is the same - but connected differently if needed

Over here, the T140 shop or LP williams shoulkd be able to tell you waht you need

The chart is correct It references month BUILT second letter is model YEAR which may be different from year BUILT as early bikes such as yours were built is the previous year.
I forgot to mention if your bikes has the stock shocks they are on upside down

Welcome to our little section of the forum. Nice ride you
have there, and thank you for the picture of your other
bike in the background. Because I had no idea of what it
was from just the model number. Not a bad looking bike
either.

There may also be a difference in the wiring of the pilot switch.
I have the switch but nothing going to it. I have a US model
79E. They are really nice bikes, you will love it.
