Fuel (Gas) Tank Trim

Hi All,

Any tips for securing the chrome centre strip on a 72 OIF fuel tank? I was thinking of a smear of clear RTV. Any suggestions?

Thanks

the center of the 2 strips is held down by the center piece why do you need the rtv?

Because there is still a little bit of movement when the centre piece is tightened and no amount of bending and pulling seems to make any difference. Also it's a pain in the a** to line everything up when refitting the tank.

you can use clear rtv as a 'gap filler'. I did the same thing to the trim strip on my '70 no rattles and a snug fit.

Hey Webby! How did this turn out? My painted tank is ready for the chrome strip, but I have know idea how to bend and fit it all into place. Do the tabs in the middle go into the center piece? I can see slots that would allow for this, and they would then be holding down the center piece once bent into place.
Inquiring minds want to know! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ash

I used a clear silicone under the chrome gas tank strip to prevent damaging the paint.
And I put the tabs through the holes in the center piece. Never had a problem doing it that way.

Hi 75Jazz,
I did the same as Danpos, I found that the trim still moved a little if you just bent the taps in place under the tank.
The RTV silicon worked a treat and has continued to work for the last two years. Also having the trim stuck in place makes removing and replacing the tank a lot easier.

I kind of had that idea, but my painter was worried that the rtv/ silicone would chemically affect the paint underneath, leading to problems with the paint job down the road.
