77 Bonnie kicker placement

I think I posted this under the wrong forum before

Hello trying to get my chopper on the road and the high shorty pipes that my friend built are right in line with my kicker pedal. I can't find my manual and need to know if the kicker is on a spline like the gear selector so I can move it up and out of the way. Looking at the kicker it has what appears to be a pin holding the kicker to the shaft, but the perplexing thing is there are threads at the bottom of the pin with no nut. The top is perfectly smooth like a stove bolt. I'll try to attach some pics as I am new to this forum. I'd like to move it up so the rubber wasn't right in the line of fire. I realize it's still going to get hot.

There's supposed to be a nut on the end of that pin - and a lock washer - to hold it in place..

Where it is is where it is.

There is a possibility that the missing nut has allowed the kick lever to rotate a bit further around the shaft than is should have. Make sure the shaft notch and cotter aren't worn. That would be the logical first check. If that is not the case, the kick shaft return spring inside the case rotates the shaft clockwise until the gear hits the stop. The gear and stop locations not adjustable but I guess you could open up the case and grind a bit off the surfaces where they touch to allow it to return a bit further. That will affect the stroke you need when kicking but it will get the pedal out of the exhaust blast. A different approach would be to weld up the groove in the kick start shaft the the cotter pin lies in and re-grind it at a bit different angle to relocate the kick start lever. The shaft would have to be removed from the case to prevent heat damage to the seal. Fourth option: have your friend make some new pipes that are repositioned or a bit longer.

jrn,

yes it is moveable but you have to go into the transmission
to do so. This was done to the old L P Williams conversions
called the Buccaneer. It was done to make leg room for the
rear sets. However, moving it forward will interfear with your
leg with out having rear sets or forward controls on the bike.

The change was done by pressing off the kickstart quadrent
flipping it over and pressing it back onto the shaft. That moves the
kickstart lever about 15 degrees in the rotation. Or it can be
pressed off and just moved one spline and that moves the
kickstart lever about 30 degrees in the rotation.

Also note that compaired to stock machines your kickstarted
looks like it either has a problem or has been leaned back.
Going back any further it might not have enough travel to
start the bike.

Pooky, I think 30 degrees would be perfect, Since the nut is missing I can just tap out the bolt and move it on the spline? That would be great if it's that easy, I still can't find that damn manual!

As far as the bike, it's always been a 1-2 kickstart bike with the Boyer system. I've rode the hell out of it for the last 2 seasons and this Winter we'll tear it down for a full rebuild and paint. I'm just trying to get it on the road for Ohio Bike Week as we have lots of plans for the last weekend. I still have tune the carbs and do the wiring, it was all shoved into a little 4 inch headlight. This summer is just for road testing the mods (WG front end with 21" wheel, moving forward controls, Triumph tank, and the pipes.). If I can go another season of basically trouble free riding, I'll consider it unbelievably lucky, but as I said my main focus is Ohio Bike Week.

Thanks

No no, you have to go into the transmission to get to the spline.
It is not right there at the kickstart. You will have to remove
the transmission outer cover. In there you will see the kickstarter
shaft and the kickstarter quardent gear. It is this gear that gets
move on the spline. The shaft has a course spline of six teeth
or something like that.

Oh then it's going to have to wait. I'm not risking another down week, it's getting too close. Let the rubber melt!

Remove the rubber and make up a 'hardcore' knurled brass kicker foot ... seems like the simple solution is to remove the rubber and either use something else or just the plain chromed rod that's there ...
