Breather leaking?

Hello all,

I'm pretty new to British bikes, but trying to learn

My 1970 T100C, I believe from my readings here, shares oil from the primary to the engine (I've not confirmed checking for holes in case, but the breather does come out of the primary/countershaft sprocket area). Please confirm/deny this presumption if possible.

I've got nearly all the oil leaks sorted, except what seems to be coming from this breather pipe, dripping from the area where the countershaft drive sprocket lives. At first I thought this was the "auto chain oiler, but it would appear that mine does not have this feature? There is certainly oil coming out of this area, leaving a small puddle after each ride (along the lines of a couple of tablespoons).

Any suggestions where this might be coming from and if there is a way to correct it? Or is this just "normal" drippings?

I'm almost certain the '70 model primary does share engine oil after the initial fill.

You really need to to know what oil type is on the floor. My best guess is that it will be gearbox oil and if so, there is a bit of work ahead in getting to the gearbox sprocket and the seals in that location.

Generally speaking the gearbox oil is going to be cleaner than engine oil, so if it's thicker and cleaner, it will be gearbox oil.

Check and let me know what you find and I'll give you some info on seals and things you'll need to check/replace. : RR

Thanks RR! I was kind of making the assumption it was engine oil, but in looking, you may be right with the gearbox. It does seem thick for engine oil. I had been blaming it on the oil tank and/or crankcase breather...perhaps incorrectly.

I'd be appreciative of any advise.

hi welcome to the world of brit bikes
you can SMELL the differance between gear oil & engine oil.
you don't have to put your nose in gear oil to smell it, there is a big diff in the odour between the 2

JTT,

I omitted to say in my original post that Brit bikes have a reputation for leaking oil, and to some extent oil leaks are more or less tolerated by owners, up to a point. Clearly it is not recommended to tolerate oil leaking to the extent that it may leave the gearbox/engine/primary case dry during a reasonable journey 2-3 hours of motoring lets say.

A few drips here and there. Who cares? But more than that, get it fixed. In your case I'd be looking to fix the leak. OK?

If you are satisfied that it is gearbox oil leaking and from a point between the gearbox sprocket and gearbox housing you will need to strip down the primary side of the bike to get at the oil seal/s. (Be mindful that primary oil may also leak from around the same area via the cover plate oil seal). Either way the clutch will need to be disassembled.

You have not said what competentcies you have with mechanical work, or tools that you have to do the job. At least one specialised Triumph tool will be needed (clutch hub puller), and maybe a puller to remove the engine sprocket. A pretty large extended socket may be required to remove the gearbox sprocket nut (a 3/4 drive socket might just be long enough).

You certainly need to have a workshop manual for your model. A spare parts catalogue is also handy to see a breakdown of the components and the order of assembly.

If you do choose to do the work yourself, get the digital camera out and photograph everything as it comes apart for reference to reassembly. Do not trust your memory, it can catch you out.

If you run into a snag, then post a photo of the problem on this forum.

I have to say that I have not worked on your model, and things did start to change just a little from about '71 and so it's a case of looking for yourself and then posting here where you can get some expert help from some very experienced owners. Best of British to you. RR
