Oif Remote Filter & Cooler Plumbing

Hi All,
I was wondering if my filter & cooler are plumbed the right way. Should the filter be between the frame (tank) and the feed of the pump or should it be on the return? would the pump get enough oil thay way seems it is a gravity feed type set up?
With the cooler at the moment it is between the head pipe and the frame (tank) return inlet, it has been like that for the last about 1400 miles. Are the rockers geting enough oil? as now & then it seems a LITTLE bit rattley? Should the cooler be between the pump return & the frame?:
thanks in advance for any help

Hi 72Tiger,

The vast majority (if not all) spin-off oil filters are between the return pump and the oil tank (the frame in your case). There may be the rare oil filter on the feed side, but I know nothing about them. Others may.

Cannot comment on the cooler setup but I have my opinion on coolers for what it's worth. Everyone these days wants to cool the oil because the Jap bikes have them. Unlike the Jap bikes, the Triumphs bump along at 4 to 5k RPM, whereas those Asian bikes are uo around 11 to 13k RPM and more.

If you were cruising the highways at 5500RPM all day, you might justify a cooler, but the 650 Triumph simply will not stand this RPM for long periods. With modern multigrade oils and a filter, you'd have all the protection you'll ever need IMHO. No doubt the oil cooler pundits will want to maul me for my comments. RR

thanks RR
the filter is plumbed that way.
the old girl had the cooler on it when i got it just before xmas.
here in Brisbane the summer temp can get as high as 40 -45 degrees C, not that you tend to ride much when its that bloody hot.
at easter i went on a run that was 1228 miles return with mostly harleys ( they were impressed with my old triumph). so i thought it would be better to run a cooler even though i only cruise on about 4000 - 4500 RPM
by the way it has a tr7 power plant (sorry fellas none matching #s, but thats how i bought it)

Tiger,
Search this forum for oil filter. There was a very good discussion a few months back that covered all the aspects and questions. To summarize:
Filter should go on scavenge pump return to tank line.
No impact to main pump pressure or flow this way.
Pumps are bad at sucking and good a pumping. Always put a filter on the pumping side.
The thread has a lot more discussion which will probably raise and answer most questions you might have on the subject.
regard,
Rob

thanks Rob,
i tried the search but not able to find much, so i think i'll just put the cooler between the filter & the tank (on the return of cause) instead of just before the head as it is now. thanks again

Hi Tiger72, It's a well known fact that a filter & cooler will extend the life of your engine......I guess it depends on how often you like to rebuild....Cheers, MM

MM
i agree about the cooler thats why i left it on. the wheather in Brisbane & where there are good riding roads around can get pretty warm at times. i know some people will say the old girls don't need coolers but thats a whole new debate.
i would just like a few opinions on wich way it should be plumbed.
after the filter before the tank?
or the way it is now, just before the feed into the rocker boxes
thanks
