Yet another "new" Triumph owner

All,

Not exactly a new owner of a Triumph but definitely a newbie when it comes to Triumph motorcycles. I've got a 1972 Triumph Tiger (TR6RV) with only 8628 miles on it which appears to have not been run since late 1973. It has an inspection sticker that looks like October 1973 and the original owner bought it in April 1973. I've actually owned it since 1988 but other projects have kept this hiding in the back of the garage until now (primarily Triumph sports cars - TR4A's and TR3).

I've been lurking here for the past few weeks and this definitely looks like the place to get help on Triumph motorcycles and I definitely need help since I'm more familiar with working on older British cars and have no experience with working on motorcycles (British or otherwise).

So first question is what's the best place for purchasing Triumph parts? When I bought the bike in 1988, I picked up the factory manual, an owner's manual and a Haynes manual I believe from Klempf's as well as a part catalog and price list from Moore's. I'll need to replace all the rubber pieces on the bike as they are suffering dry-rot.

Second question is regarding badge emblems. The original owner apparently decided to remove the emblems and paint his initials on the gas tank. I've seen the Emgo ones which are painted for $59.99 and other unpainted ones going for at least $30 more. Is there anything wrong with the quality of the Emgo ones? Also any recommendations on petcocks as they appear to have broken the levers on the ones that came with it. I'd prefer to go with ones that look as close to original as possible.

Third question is whether the air boxes are supposed to be plastic or cast aluminum for a 1972 Triumph Tiger. The parts that came with mine are plastic but I have a 1971 BSA which appears to have similar aluminum pieces.

Fourth question is regarding checking the oil level. According to the owner's manual, there's supposed to be a dipstick in the tool pouch which I don't have. Can you buy this anywhere or is there some other way to check the oil level?

Not long after I purchased the Triumph, I also managed to pick up a 1971 BSA basket of parts really cheaply. It looks like I have parts from a 1971 Lightning and a 1971 Thunderbolt. The frame is an A65L but the engine is an A65T and then I have a couple of boxes of parts. Can anyone tell me what parts might be the same as on my 1972 Triumph Tiger? I'm looking to keep the parts which might server as spares and sell the rest to help fund getting the Triumph running again. So far it would appear the speedometer, headlamp rim and coils are the same. Can someone tell me if the rims and front brake are the same?

I've posted pictures of the Tiger and the BSA parts bike here in my member album.

Sorry for the long post and I appreciate any help you can give me!

Thanks Caulky for the reply and help.

I thought the Emgo badges were metal from the pictures. Here's the link to the place selling them on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...lenotsupported

Thanks for the info on the air box covers as well. They weren't on the bike when I bought it so I wanted to be sure that they hadn't been replaced over the years.

Interesting, I wasn't even thinking that the frame could be the same or even the forks. Unfortunately, I've got the 2 bikes in different locations and can't do a straight up comparison.

Thanks, I had seen some references in other posts to Klempf's here still, but didn't know if there was any place that people preferred dealing with here in the States.
