How am I supposede to remove the master cylinder. I have tried every wrench I own and there is one retaining bolt I cannot get to loosen. I am taking my front Master Cylinder to get a kit installed and wanted to carry the rear but I cant get it off the bike.

I changed one out once and remember it was a *****. Problem is it was so long ago I can't remember what I used. I know I didn't buy a different tool. I remember it wasn't the master cylinder that was my problem though. The lining on the pressure hose had come loose and was acting like a flapper valve and was refusing to release pressure so it pumped up pressure causing the brake to drag. It relieved itself after a short period of rest. I just have standard tools. Hopefully some one on the site has R&R'd one recently and see's your problem. Meanwhile I'd keep f------ with it. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Frank

Joe,
I had the same problem as you. The problem is that the body of the m/cyl rises up around the 2 nuts. (They sit in like a little "cave") So it is difficult to get a socket around the nuts because it snags the raised m/cyl body. This problem is compounded by the fact that the nuts are the type with the rounded edges on the exposed side so the socket has even less room to grip. I ended up getting one off with mole grips. The other was too tight for this so what I was going to do was grind down the socket on a bench grinder to make it thinner at the end so it would fit between the nut and the raised m/cylinder body. You could try this. In the end I discovered the problem was not with the m/cyl at all but with the rubber pipe being bunged up so I didn't need to remove the m/cyl.

Hi BonnevilleJoe;
4 what it's worth...

My bike is a '78 Bonnie, and I needed to remove everything from the frame to get it welded (along swingarm as oil was leaking outa OIF)... so I had to remove the rear master cylinder also.

I didn't have any trouble getting onto the nuts, on the inside, it was holding the bolt head for that one bolt that has almost zero clearence. I found that I had a tool-kit wrench from my Volkswagen days, made out of stamped metal, thin, 13mm, and it fit just fine.

Now I've since learned that the master mounts to a plate that also comes off, if you have the motormounts off.

suspect this is all water under the bridge, as you have solved the mystery by this time.

gotta enjoy turning a wrench with these old Bonnies, roight? :hammer:
