I am trying to locate a rebuild kit for Amal MK II carbs for my bike. I found http://www.amalcarb.co.uk/partDetail.aspx?partID=2647 , but I am not sure if this is a match to what I have. In teh description it says, "A complete repair kit for all 2000 series 4 stroke Mk2 Concentric carburetters". I have no idea whether my carbs fall into that category or not. Any help from a wiser person would be much appreciated. Also does anyone know the Main Jet, Pilot Jet and Needle Jet size for a '78 T140E?

Thought that Mk 2 did not come until 79 model yr and I have checked that this is correct. However you may have a 79 model as model yr started in Sept 78. The suffix "E" is also consistent with a 79 model.
Mk1 has a "tickler", the Mk2 does not and enrichment is via a cable (or lever on some yrs).
If it is a Mk2 then the kit should be correct.

Main Jet 200 (190 for Mk1)
Pilot Jet 25 (not fitted for Mk1)
Needle 0.105 (0.106 for Mk1)
Needle type/position 2C3/2 (Std/1 forMk1)

Engine no for 79mdl started 11001.

MKIIs

I recommend you grab yourself a proper manual like this one.

I have found its best to verify your jets and needle sizes and positions from a good written reference as well as the infinitely experienced people on this forum. You also never know who was in there switchin stuff up before you got to it so you cant always go by the configuration in which you found it. The biggest thing with the MKIIs in my opinion is if the seats on the Cold Start Plungers are failing it will run rich and be impossible to tune. The rebuild kit does not come with those parts and visual inspection alone usually cant be trusted.
(I agree with HOPOIL, MAP is great, call em up or shoot them an email)

Thanks for the information on the 1978 model with Mk 2 carbs. My factory manual for 1978 (a contemporary one - not a later reprint) makes no mention of Mk2 carbs for the year. However "Bonnie - The Development History" says the T140E went into production Jan 78 ie part way through the Model Yr and was for the USA market only. Probably too late for the manual.
Have been riding and restoring Triumphs for quite a few years but have discovered much new information via this website.

Ah yes, I know all about being left out of the manuals. As the proud owner of a 79 T140D I must rely on hastily assemble supplements and addendums to both the factory manual and parts catalog. Even they have left me in the lurch to fend for myself at times…the specs for most T140’s do not apply mine.

  • Remove the screws from the velocity stack to expose the face of the carb and three air holes. One of the outside holes is blocked, the other two are open. Remove a loose fitting air jet from the center hole. Replace the stack and tighten the screws.
  • Remove the float bowl. Replace the choke jet in the bowl using a small screwdriver.
  • Remove the jet holder from the carb body. Change the needle jet and replace the main jet holder in the carb body.
  • Remove the pilot jet, located on the bottom in the float bowl area. Replace the pilot and replace the float bowl.
  • Unscrew the top of the carb, remove the slide and disconnect the cable. Replace the needle. Place the clip in the middle groove. Place the cable in the new slide with return spring and retaining washer over the edge of the slide. Insert the new needle in the slide and fit the retaining washer over the top of the needle. Replace the slide, screw on the top and reinstall the carb.
  • Synchronize the slides.
  • Set the pilot adjustment screw 1 to1 1/2 turns from bottom.
These jets etc work best with free flowing air filters and open (non stock) mufflers
Spark plug: Champion N4 or NGK B7ES
