Red face what no pilot jet!

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum - I'm hoping you can put me out of my misery!!

REF. 1979 Triumph T140E 30mm Amal MK II carb, 2900 series, US spec.

Recently overhauling my carbs on my Triumph I could not find the pilot jet!!!!. Referring to the workshop manual it shows the location for the pilot jet on the underside of the main body of the carb. I have what appears to be a pilot jet blanking screw in this location, (confirmed on Amal web site) but no jet.
Looking inside the float bowl there is a choke jet. which shares the same part number as the elusive pilot jet
Is this really the pilot jet, called up as a cold start jet in the workshop manual?
Looking on the web I have seen references to alternate locations for the pilot jet depending on the carbs application, ie 2 or 4 stroke.
I have also seen references to the pilot jet being buried in the main body of the carb behind the mixture screw.
I would really appreciate some clarification in this matter!
Thanks!

just to give a quick answer before the experts get here...everything you are saying is correct...there were two locations for the pilot jet, you could have either (but the plug is probably just that, look to the other location). The cold start jet is quite a bit smaller, and I believe deep inside/at the bottom of a long narrow tube...John Healey has detailed this in the past, I would try a quick search.
good luck...
