Rookie parts ordering question

Hi all,
I'm just starting to buy parts for my half finished (by previous owner) 68 Bonnie restoration.
Ive looked at British Only . Com and its honestly one of the worst web sites for ordering parts. The search feature is antiquated (Ok--Im being harsh since I work in the software industry!) plus the part numbers I have in parts book given by previous owner and an online parts book dont work.
Klempfs is better but they seem to only stock the major parts.

If, for example, I just wanted to order a complete brake lever assembly, do i need the part number for each little piece? Does any vendor have a decent online ordering system?

I know - probably a rookie question. Seems ordering old Triumph parts is a bit like learning a foriegn language

Im probably being harsh since when ordering parts for my BMW I can go online and click on the model then click through all the micro fiche explosion diagram and click the part I need and add it to my cart--never need to know any numbers whatsoever.

It's a mixed bag out there, some people will do the research on each little part number that make up "a rear brake pedal setup", others work strictly one part number at a time.

As far as British Only, I like thier website best, as I have my own parts books to confirm every little bit & bob.

You also need the conversion of the leading letter code to the appropriate 2-digit number code to MUCH simplify your searches, and also BO search likes an extra leading "02" with a dash in front of the basic part number to narrow it down even further.

Hey Kev,

You kind of just have to give Mitch Klempf a call, his site is
way outdated and he does not even come close to listing
all the parts he has in stock. Please remember though he
is just one person over there, he may tell you to call back
in an hour.

It is always worth the wait though, his insight and knowledge
are always spot on with him. I have call many times never
with any part numbers and I always get the right parts.

Yes! Adding the "02" helped immensley! I can look up most of the parts now in the parts books. Would have been nice if they gave some examples of how to convert these numbers.

Thanks Paul!

Thanks everyone for the leads.
Tri Cor is fantastic for cross checking since they seemed to have taken the time to photograph everything.
Thanks.

Kev,

You might want to use email to get price quotes. I am building a spreadsheet with all the parts I'm going to need for my '66 Bonnie. I simply send the spreadsheet to the parts vendor and they return it to me with everything priced and whether in stock or not. I made a separate column for each vendor so I can build a final list for each of them based on their pricing. So far, Klempf's. Brit Only and Baxters have all turned the quote around within a week. Brit Only turned it around the same day!
regards,
Rob

Rob, thats a great idea!
I'm starting to get to know how all this 60's parts stuff works. Doesn't take long when you are really interested in it.

I was thinking of doing a spreadsheet anyhow. That way I can click on "Auto Sum" and know exactly how much Ive sunk....I mean invested in the bike

Cheers,
Kevin.

Kev,
I've dealt with Mitch and have been content with results. He as 'MOST' as stated earlier will more than likely be able to satisfy any questions over the phone to help ensure you are able to get what you are wanting. Often there are options with parts and with whom they are made, etc.
