Post New Updates for old 750

Ok... I'm a newbie to this site, as well as the Triumph world. (now that's out of the way) I have a 1977 750 t140v engine that I would like to update as much as possible. I got new gaskets, oil seals, and Sparx ignition. ( I haven't connected yet) My next update is going to be carbs. Just wondering what carb set up is best? I am interested in the Mikuni carbs, but don't know what size I need. 30, 32, or 34? And last but not least... Should I run a belt driven system clutch? I am just trying to make this engine as worry free and reliable as I can, so any other updates and recommendations are very welcomed. Thanks in advance

This is just my opinion of course, but 30 or 32 carbs are Ok. 34 is probably a bit too big unless you have done some major head and cam work. Belt drives? I don't know, you can solve almost any clutch problem by fitting a seven plate clutch kit from Norman Hyde. Much cheaper than a belt drive.
good luck, Todd

Hello choppedtriumph,

Welcome to the group.

Well, the original Amals are just as good as the rest of the
setups you can run. If however, you have your heart set on
the Mikunis go no larger than the 32 size. That is what my
ride is running, note last owner of my ride should have been
selling meat products not working on a motorcycle.

All in all I am happy with the Mikunis.

As for the belt drive, advantages, you can run a dry type clutch and
you do not have to adjust the primary anymore. But rather
pricy for the small advantages. Your ride, your call on that one.

look down the page a bit for the "MIKUNI CARBS FOR BRITISH MOTORCYCLES" header.

You would be better off spending the money on balancing the crank and getting a seven plate clutch. A engine that doesn't rattle your fillings and a light clutch are the golden grail of Triumph twins. Your sparxs electrics takes care of the reliability , if you take care to wire soundly.

Thanks for all your input. Is the 7 clutch plates original? I thought it had 5 or 6. And also... Are all 76-77 750's 5 speeds? I think I'm missing the 5th gear
