all of the sudden no compression in one of my cylinders?, help!

all winter long i have been working on my bike i never touched the motor though. i was just making it into a chopper of my taste rather than the previous owners taste. i have 1966 tr6 and it would start right up everytime on the third kick at most. ive ridden it last fall a couple of times and then i would start it up every once and a while during the winter while it was up on the work bench. so last weekend i took it off the bench since i had it all mocked up and decided to take it for a ride up the street a couple of times. it started on kick #3 and would rev but in gear at low rpm it would wanna die so i revved it higher then let the clutch out and off i went but it was running really bad lots of flames and back firing from the exhaust so i adjusted the carb back to what my haynes manual says to go from and then it starts but the idle needed adjusting so it stalled i turned the idle screw and then it would not start. so i'll kick it alot and all it does now is shoot about a 1 foot long flame out of one pipe POP like a gun going off and nothing from the other. so i took my spark plugs out and kick with my thumbs over the holes and blows it off the head on one side and on the other it does not meaning no compression. what could it be. the last it ran was when the idle was not enough and just stalled it does not seem normal that that could happen at low rpms like idleing. so i dont think the rings are done i feel as if an exhaust valve is stuck open or something but then i think the piston would be hitting it, let me know what you think i should check out. thanks every one.

Take the rocker inspection caps off and with the plugs out see if all the valves are operating
If they are it could be stuck rings

Good Luck

I would not expect stuck rings to provide zero compression. I'm assuming here when you put your thumb over the SP hole, you gave it an enthusiastic kick or if both SPs were out a good fast stroke of the kicker. Even with stuck rings, the volume of air being displaced should give you some sense of compression.

Squirt some motor oil into the SP hole and try again. It will help make a better seal and you should see a difference if it is rings. If no difference, then my vote would be stuck valve, which the experts will have to comment on the amount of clearnance between the valve head and the piston dome. Does not have to be open much to flow a lot of air. Or, you had a piston that was getting ready to hole and finally did this time around.
Good luck,
Rob

Hopefully it's just a loose adjuster that tightened up and is leaving a valve (or 2) open. You'll get zero compression and you can certainly get a flame shooting.

other possibilities?

well if it's a valve not closing competely, which it sounds like, you might have a busted valve spring.

hopefully it's just a dry valve guide, and a little oil on the stem will free it up. in that case make sure your rockers and guides are getting oil.

you know how to get oil up the tube to the feed lines by closing the main return line outlet in the tank with your finger right?

well i checked, and my valves were deffinatly moving and thanks to snakeoil's advice with pouring oil through the SP hole the oil was just going right through so i think i have stuck rings. i also seen a bunch of black sludge moving around in there too. so it looks like im gonna be learning how to rebuild a motor now. thanks for the help in diagnosing the problem.

Please keeps us posted on what you find. Being able to connect symptoms to root causes helps everyone here.
