Hi
I have a Bonneville T140V 1979 with Mk II Amals.
I want to replace the standard silencers with Norton style pea-shooter (straight through) types. Do I need to rejet the carbs or should this be fine? Also, does anyone know what the good makes are? I saw some Campbells which looked great quality but expensive.
Thanks
Peter

Anytime you change exhaust or intake components, you need to test the carbeuration, examine the plugs and adjust the jetting if necessary. Failure to do so can result in poor performance, at best, and possibly catastrophic engine damage at worst.

This should help:

Hi Peter, good advice from Oily.........as usual! Check out the silencers for reinforcing plates around the two stud mounting bosses. If the silencers were made to fit TRIUMPH they should have the extra thickness plate welded on, if not then they are Norton and will crack on your Triumph.
Big D cycles do ( or at least did) a Triumph fact sheet with torque settings various mods and in particulear, mods for Amal MKII carbs.
Do the mods as they say and you will be very pleased with the difference especially if you fit the pea-shooters. You may be able to raise the needles 1 groove and perhaps the main jet from 190 to 200 but try it first on the std settings. Roy

I have a '79 T 140E, Kickstart. I wanted to get away from the epa mandate. Stock it idled rich and ran lean. I came across an article in MOTORCYCLIST MAG. July 1981. To improve the bike it was suggested, and I did the following: Peashooter mufflers (Norton copy) from Bub Enterprises, 785 E. Brokaw Rd.,San Jose. Ca. 95112 . I followed recommendations and installed their JRC air filers(old style square Triumph type) . Carb modifications as follows: Main jet 230 from 200, needle jet 106 from 105, needle type 2a1 from 2c3, needle position 3 from 2,Throttle valve cutaway 3 and a half from 3 (slides), pilot jet -15 from -25. Starter jet 50, no change. Primary Air Jet, omit. . I removed blanked of f inner air box cover(plastic) These were all Amal parts. There was no comparison from the stock Bonnie I had been riding for 2 yrs. I have had no problems with this upgrade. The mufflers were top grade and still look great. Runs and sounds great. If this helps fine. If you need clariffication, I'll be watching . Frank

To Fank regarding his 5-11 respons:

Frank

Saw your message on this board--regarding the carb mods you did to your 79T140. You said "I followed recommendations and installed their JRC air filers(old style square Triumph type)" Pleaes tell me more about this airfilter modification. I've been wondering if their is any performance mods I could do to the air fulters on my 78 T140E. I think we might have the same Amal Mk II carbs. Tell me more about the new air filters. Any pictures.

Thanks.
