Before I did the speedometer pod and handlebar upgrade I discussed in a previous post and blog I wanted to do something about the taillight and turn signals on my Scrambler (wasn’t that taillight originally used on a Yamaha Virago?) The above Lucas style taillight and turn signals available from several aftermarket suppliers did the trick for the rear end but what to do with the front? I did not like the low position of the original turn signals ….
… and wanted to move them to the headlight mount as on the late sixties style Triumphs.
So I made a new headlight/turn signal mount from the long stalks that came with the front turn signal kit I also purchased at the same time. I cut the head off of two 8mm x 40mm long bolts and drilled a clearance hole through them for wiring. I tapped the mounting end of the turn signal stalk tube with an 8mm tap and came up with something like this to replace the standard 8mm headlight mounting bolts. I used Loctite “Blue” threadlocker on the modified bolts to keep them in place.
Hear is a picture of them mounted with new wiring (including a ground wire not included with the kit) and turn signal housings in place.
And a close up of the right side housing.
I used new Amp connector plugs and contacts to keep the upgrade “factory”. I bought them from Bellacorse which they sell for a very reasonable price
Here is a picture of the new wiring in place and connected.
And the finished product …
… yes they stick out far, actually about the exact same distance as the stock ones, but, oh so retro looking. I removed the regulator/rectifier bracket and cut off the old turn signal mounts, repainted, and reinstalled. Project completed with a cleaner look, IMHO.
