Racing is a whole lot different from track days, as I am discovering. People will sponsor you, for one thing, but you have stipulations to adhere to. For example, I just got a primary sponsorship from More Power Racing, a relatively new shop in Marysville, Washington. They are trying to build up an internet parts business, and are using sponsorships for local racers as one way to do it. I have to race a certain minimum number of races, display their logo in certain ways and so on. Their logo is the attachment, and it will be on my bike, my van (once it is painted and less disreputable looking) and probably on a banner I display at the track whenever I race or go to a track day.

There are all kinds of resources available for people to hunt for sponsorships, but the levels of support vary a lot. For example, most of the sponsorships I expect to receive will be for discounts. I don't expect to get anything free, just at a reduced cost. Reduced cost means a lot, since I can get through a set of tires in two events, and if I crash, chances are I will need parts and a new helmet. I need a new helmet anyway, so it is just as well to have some sponsors.

I haven't even begun to get the bike ready- it is in my brother's garage in pieces. As it happens, a 675 riding friend signed up for his novice season too. He will be riding his Triumph. I suspect it will be a bit faster as a machine than my Suzuki, but that's ok with me. If I get beat by a Triumph, it is OK, since I am really a Triumph person underneath the practical Suzuki veneer. Having a friend to share pit space and stories (tall tales) with will make the novice season even more fun.

A number of other friends already race, so I expect to see them regularly during the season too. A couple of them ride SV650s and at least one more rides a GSXR 600, although it is a bit older than the one I now have. Oddly enough, I haven't even ridden the bike. I took it apart as soon as I got it, and I haven't been able to get the time to put it back together again! I hope to paint it this weekend, so I will post pictures in my album as soon as I get the work done. Prep for paint will include scrubbing off the bugs, sanding it a bit, and rattle canning it. It is a race bike, after all! It only has to look good from 20 feet when it is going by as fast as I can ride it.

I am very excited about all this. I hope it isn't too obvious.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.
