  • desecration of a war memorial; inexcusable
  • riding a bicycle through a flowerbed; immature and intolerable
  • blaming it all on the indiscretions of youth; weak
  • throwing a kid's bicycle in the road; reactionary and a poor example of how to handle a situation
  • grabbing a kid by the collar and chastising him when (if I read the article correctly) she was not certain that he had anything to do with the vandalism: unwise and irrational
  • Should she pay for any damage to the bike?: yes
  • Being convicted of assault for grabbing a collar: ridiculous
Kids are in great need of reminders that they owe a great deal of their current freedoms to those for whom those monuments are erected. A modicum of respect is not too much to ask of any teenager. Adults need to act like adults and keep their actions under control. We also need to remember that many of the kids growing up today have no linear connection to WWII. To them, it might as well be Thermopylae. Adults need to help instill the lessons learned in that struggle as the last of that generation is dying off. Perhaps, they will have a better understanding when they are confronted by the current stream of vets returning from Iraq. Let's hope so.

Juvenile Delinquent

Many years ago as a teenager I received many a "Cuff up the Ear" from the local bobby for being a prat. If I went home and told my father P.C. Green just assaulted me my father would of given me a bloody good hiding, not because I got caught doing wrong but because I was complaining about being punished when getting caught doing wrong.
This kid was caught doing wrong and instead of being a man and excepting his punishment he had to run home crying to his mum/dad who should of asked why and what were you doing.
I blame poor parenting, maybe mum/dad should point out that for every action there's a consequence and if you act be prepared to except the reaction. ie If you play with fire youre going to get burnt.
The destruction of a war memorial is going to bring about consequences.
F.W.I.W if I had caught the little sh*ts I would of done more than cuff his ear.

Bring back the birch and flog 'em within an inch of their lives

The fact that most people don't smack kids is why the world has come to this point.

Wrong wrong wrong. Teaching kids solid principles does not need to be administered at the end of a beating.

You're assuming that all kids are willing to learn "solid principles". Ever been a substitute school teacher? I have & believe me, there are LOTS of kids out there that don't give a rat's a$$ about ANY principles, solid or not. The only thing they understand and ultimately bow to is increasing levels of force from a VERY stern warning to being physically removed from class. The notion that everyone is willing to learn is naive at best. Unfortunately, there are some people who, for whatever reason, REFUSE to play by the rules and therefore, for the good of society, must be dealt with accordingly.

When all else fails, we need primitive pack discipline to keep us in line.

We are only a few years out of the trees (especially teenagers) - one day perhaps we will be above it - but not today.

Apologies to any creationists out there.

The sooner you start demanding excellent behavior from children, the better. This almost always requires a guiding hand on the seat of knowledge at least once or twice, but the sooner you do it the better (once they can understand cause and effect). There have to be consequences to bad behavior. I can't count the number of times I've watched parents tell their children to do something or not do something, yet fail utterly to enforce any consequences when their children ignore them utterly. No wonder these parents get ignored.

Yes, children should listen because it's the right thing to do. No, you don't have the right to ignore it or get angry when they don't. You are a parent, and you have more important responsibilities than being your child's buddy or making them happy. Socialization requires discipline, occasionally of a physical nature.

The longer children go without firm behavioral boundaries, the harder it is to break the cycle of unruly behavior and establish the limits. This woman was biting off more than she could chew, and blew her cool to boot, but at least she tried to teach them respect. That's more than the courts or apparently their parents were doing.

Spare the rod, spoil the child.

Kids push the boundaries until they find one, those that don't end up in jail, we should try to stop the trend towards that at an early age rather than standing by uttering PC platitudes.

There are more people in jail today than there ever has been and it's full of those that were brought up without parental control.

I'm thinking of one of my favorite tunes from the Waterboys:
