Mean spirited

A few week ago on my way to work I witnessed some poor sod getting knocked off of his push-bike by some inattentive car driver.
I stopped and gave help phoned for an ambulance and gave plod a bell as well. The medics took the guy away and plod took statments.
I then carried on to work arriving almost an hour late. The company I work for have a "Please explain" form if you are late so I filled in the form and gave it to H.R. fully expecting to be paid for stopping and giving assistance. Checking my pay cheque I noticed I had been stopped an hours pay [b]AND[b] lost my attendance bonus for the month.
When I asked the H.R manager why, he said " You were late without good excuse." I asked if he had read my explanation he just replied "Yes but you didn't provide any proof of the alleged accident, the company requires you to give some sort of written evidence.
I had a few choise words for this individual that I couldn't print here. So for any of you who work for Tenneco Automotive I would like to let you know what a bunch of mean b@st@rds they are.
Maybe next time I could run about taking photo's using my mobile phone camera.

Jezzz what a great global corp image.

That sucks in a big way.

My company is not like that I'm happy to say. If you had done the same thing where I work, and the CEO found out, he'd come and shake your hand.

At least you have the satisfaction of knowing you did the right thing - that's no small thing either.

Corporations don't need to be Jerks.

Well, good for you anyway. Complain to the next higher management layer in the company - sometimes helps.

I wouldn't get paid for it either at my job. What's so odd about that? You're not there, you don't get paid. I don't see that it has anything to do with why you were not there.

The police have a record of your report, get them to verify you were a witness and performing a civic duty. You may still not get paid but you will have the satisfaction that they will then know you were telling the truth and they were too quick to doubt you.

That is largely the way it is, but there's nothing wrong with being rewarded (or at least not penalized) for doing your civil duty. I pay my employees for this kind of thing. As a result a lot of them are a lot more dedicated to the job in hand. It works well for me.

Heaven help any of them that falsly claim something like this so that they can swan in late. Striking that balance is the hard part of course, and that's why most companies have a distinct policy on it.

My company is very small - so it's easier to deal with I guess.

Get a copy of the police report with your startement on it. That will provide "proof".
Then offer to shove it up HR's arse.
Then give your 2 weeks notice. Then sue 'em for a hostile work envirement. Your in Aust so it might fly.
You pay taxes, time to collect.

That's why I work for myself

But apparently Mike's company do, otherwise they wouldn't have made the issue one of evidence rather than absence per se.

As Tbirdnz suggests, you should ask the police to write confirming that they took a statement from you at the scene or, failing that, to provide you with a copy of it.

Good point:

It sounds like they are not saying no, just prove it.

We know you did what you say you did, but unfortuantely instituions don't play like that. Play their game and give them some evidence. Mr. Plod could maybe write something for you.

Just, and this is easy to say, don't take it personally.

yup... that's pretty shady. I can see it both ways: you shouldn't expect to get paid for not being there... but at the same time, would you have not stopped if you knew you'd lose an hour's pay?

That's rhetorical, for sure, but you get the point. Your company is probably trying to avoid every swingin' dork pulling the "excuse" card on a daily basis.

If that were to happen to me at my old job, I'd likely have gotten my a$$ chewed for NOT stopping.

I'd get a copy of the police report and file it with whomever at work, emphatically requesting NOT to get paid for that hour just to show them that they're A-holes.... but that's me; one of those bite-off-your-nose people.

Just what you'd expect from a small minded power hungry little man! I would take it higher, after getting proof, such as telephone records, Police report sheet, including your statement, etc... Explain that your good citizenry came as natural but you understand that this little 'Sheathhead' doesn't see things responsibly, nor does he represent the morays of the Company, just a (un)healthy but excessive exhuberance for his duties banal. If something along those lines doesn't work, look for another job - it isn't right for you to sacrifice for the company at the expense of social duties - money lost, is not really the point here. It's the small mindedness and a complete lack of respect for civic duties, any employer that fails to see reason, is not worth working for - and that little Napoleon, is most definitely a mean and dubious person. In another age he would be beaten and scarred for such behaviour, taking from your rice bowl and you just being the good citizen. Rebellion, go wild, egg em all, put goldfish in the water dispenser! Or at least burn his Action man collection in 'his' bed, then poo in his tabacco tin, for later! Absolutely outrageous behavior - go to the press, splash it all over the local rags, call up the regional Tv news stations, radio, Ap. upitn, Reuters - cnn fox, national enquirer, the star - even. You might get a buck and some press, fired probably and some pride. Think about it!
