This is what happens when HR people start acting like the Police (Gestapo) rather than the "Go to" people in an organisation. It's the easy way out, as you don't need to deal with people "face to face".

Pendantic Rules and Regulations are tops in bringing an otherwise good company to it's knee's, and are also a red flag for an inability to Manage properly.

On the other hand, lazy, no-account, untrustworthy workers very often force the hand, so what can you say?

Leadership in an organisation goes much further than mere dollars and cents. Poor leadership - or none at all - fosters this type of reaction, so take that into consideration as well. Corporate leaders are expected to openly contribute to the community as well as improve the environment.

My advice? Get the police report, offer it to HR for compensation, write a NICE letter to your company owner, outling your thoughts and concerns.

The risk? Well, first of all you already have compensation from your actions, in the fact that you have helped a fellow human being. Secondly, if you were to be fired, what's to lose? It's a sociably irresponsible organisation to begin with, and from the looks of it, won't be around in say ten years due to incompetence.

Go for it!

Is it Godwin's law if one is referring to someone who isn't participating in the thread?

The behavior of the 1% require policies that make life difficult for everyone. A true professional knows how to interpret those policies to maximize the impact on the 1%, and minimize the impact on the 99%. A true tool just assume the policies were written so he wouldn't have to think.

I don't know which is worse, the 1% or the tool.

I then carried on to work arriving almost an hour late. Checking my pay cheque I noticed I had been stopped an hours pay [b]AND[b] lost my attendance bonus for the month.
When I asked the H.R manager why, he said " You were late without good excuse." I asked if he had read my explanation he just replied "Yes but you didn't provide any proof of the alleged accident, the company requires you to give some sort of written evidence.
I had a few choise words for this individual that I couldn't print here. So for any of you who work for Tenneco Automotive I would like to let you know what a bunch of mean b@st@rds they are.
Maybe next time I could run about taking photo's using my mobile phone camera.

Jezzz what a great global corp image.
Do you have any medical training?

I don't know if the laws are the same here as they are there but I'm a certified EMT and here, we have what's calle a "duty to act". This means that if you are properly trained and you don't offer help, you could be held liable.

Here, it is illegal for employers to penalize you or terminate your imployment for fulfilling your duty to act. You could sue them for that...

I think perhaps Godwin has (had) waaay to much time on his hands. Who pays for this kind of thing?

Maybe he was a fascist brown-shirted stormtrooper?

A bit tightfisted if you ask me

OK, so he could have politely asked for some documentation or evidence of the accident for the record. Maybe the guy OK's the payment and bonus on payroll and then gets his butt handed to him on a platter for not having followed procedure. This doesn't excuse rude behavior however.

If you've been there 10 years and have a solid record of being punctual, you'd think they'd cut you the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure the policy is to keep people from slacking and using lame excuses but those people are usually habitually tardy and not as productive. If this had been the third time this month you were late for helping someone, then I'd say they would be right to ask for some proof. But everyone is late once in a blue moon.

Also, "perfect attendance" bonuses are often poor policy choices. It encourages people to come to work sick when they should stay home, thus infecting everyone else and taking longer to get well so they are less productive for a longer period. Or people coming in to work when something serious has happened in the family, death in family, teenager with problems, etc. So people come into work un-focused and in a foul mood because they feel they can't stay home to address a problem without being unduly penalized at work. Some of these policies just need to go away; others need to be revised to be a little more accommodating to the fact that healthy, happy employees produce more than stressed, micro-managed ones.

Yeah, sometimes you wonder why they bother putting the "H" in "HR". If you really, really wanted to make a point you'd call the newspapers, TV and radio stations with your story. Someone would be bound to pick it up.

?????

I still don't understand why someone should be compensated for not being at work and then thinking they deserve it because they did a good deed.

Thank you for your kindness.

What more is required?

The payment should be in the act of doing the deed itself.
